Maserati Achieves Double Victory In Misano GT2 European Series Amid Strong Competition
Philippe Prette of LP Racing achieved a double win in the Am Cup, solidifying his top position in the class rankings and securing second place overall. Meanwhile, Dinamic Motorsport's Mauro Calamia and Roberto Pampanini claimed second place overall and in the Pro-Am class during Race 2. These successes occurred at the Misano World Circuit Marco Simoncelli during round 4 of the GT2 European Series powered by Pirelli.
In Race 1 on Saturday, Prette started from pole position and maintained his lead until the mandatory pit stop. Upon returning to the track, he managed to fend off competitors until five minutes before the finish when he was overtaken by a Pro driver. Despite this, Prette finished second overall and won in the Am Cup class.
The Maserati GT2 number 7, driven by Pampanini initially, faced challenges after starting seventh. Pampanini lost grip while defending his position, causing him to drop to tenth place. Calamia then took over and worked hard to recover positions throughout the race week.
Sunday's race saw Maserati GT2s start from fifth and sixth positions. Calamia quickly moved up to fourth place, responding effectively to attacks from competitors. After a driver change, Pampanini capitalised on a pit issue to secure second place, maintaining it until the end for a podium finish on home ground.
Prette secured another victory in the Am Cup on Sunday, starting from pole and leading throughout the race. This win further strengthened his lead in class standings. Niccolò Pirri also gained experience with Maserati GT2 during trials, marking a return for Maserati to closed-wheel racing after years away.
At just 16 years old, Niccolò is the youngest driver ever to test drive a Maserati on track. The brand is increasingly focusing on young talent through initiatives like the SRO GT Academy project announced last June at Spa-Francorchamps.
Maserati's Future Plans
The Academy offers top under-30 drivers an opportunity to race in 2027 without budget constraints. At Misano, an MCXtrema car celebrated Maserati MC12's first victory anniversary with special livery seen earlier at Belgian trials.
Maria Conti of Maserati Corse expressed pride in their achievements at Misano: "Winning this weekend at Misano is even more important for us. We would like to dedicate our pride to Claudio Bortoletto... We dedicate to him a weekend of powerful emotions and an extraordinary haul: Philippe Prette’s double victory in the Am class both in Race 1 – having started from pole – and in Race 2, as well as the Calamia/Pampanini duo's runner-up position in the Pro-Am class on Sunday."
