Maruti Suzuki Sales Increased After Doing This!

Maruti Suzuki has recently enhanced its vehicle lineup by making six airbags standard across most of its models. This move has led to a noticeable increase in customer interest and bookings, particularly for entry-level cars like the Wagon R. However, the rise in prices due to this update is affecting the conversion of these bookings into actual sales.

Partho Banerjee, Maruti Suzuki's senior executive officer noted that while there has been a 7 percent rise in bookings for models such as the Celerio, Wagon R, and Swift, the price sensitivity of this segment poses challenges. Customers are grappling with increased costs ranging from Rs 10,000 to Rs 35,000 depending on the model.

Impact on Entry-Level Models

The introduction of six airbags has bolstered customer confidence in Maruti's entry-level vehicles. Despite this positive sentiment, converting interest into sales remains difficult due to the higher prices. The Eeco model has been particularly affected by this price increase following its airbag update.

Maruti is actively exploring more accessible financing options to help customers manage these increased costs. Banerjee acknowledged that while the overall industry remains stable, there is a shift within segments. SUVs are increasingly capturing market share from hatchbacks like Alto and S-Presso.

Pending Updates for Certain Models

Currently, only two models—S-Presso from Arena and Ignis from Nexa—are yet to receive the six-airbag update. These models are nearing the end of their life cycles and are unlikely to be updated with this safety feature. Banerjee mentioned that these two models contribute just 2.5 percent to Maruti's total volumes.

The company has already updated 97 percent of its portfolio with standard six airbags. This strategic decision reflects Maruti's commitment to enhancing safety features across its range while navigating market dynamics and consumer preferences.

DriveSpark Thinks

Maruti Suzuki's initiative to standardise six airbags has positively influenced customer perceptions but also introduced pricing challenges. The company continues to adapt its strategies to balance safety enhancements with affordability in a competitive automotive landscape.
