Maruti Suzuki Jimny Struggles To Gain Traction In Indian Market Amidst High Competition
The Maruti Suzuki Jimny, launched with high hopes in India, has not met sales expectations. In January 2025, only 163 units were sold, mirroring the same figure from January 2024. This lack of growth highlights its struggle in the market. Despite being an SUV with off-road capabilities, the Jimny faces criticism for its high price, limited engine power, and compact size.
The Jimny's pricing starts at Rs 12.76 lakh and goes up to Rs 14.81 lakh for the top variant, based on ex-showroom prices. It features a 1.5-litre petrol engine that delivers 105 PS and 134 Nm of torque. Customers can choose between a 5-speed manual or a 4-speed automatic gearbox, and it also offers a 4-wheel drive option.

In the competitive SUV segment, the Jimny faces tough rivals like the Mahindra Thar and Force Gurkha. Among these, the Mahindra Thar is particularly popular, with around 8,000 units sold monthly in India. In contrast, the Jimny's sales remain sluggish, contributing to its reputation as one of Maruti Suzuki's least successful models.
Despite its off-road prowess, customers often cite the Jimny's cost and engine limitations as drawbacks. The vehicle's compact dimensions also deter some buyers who seek more spacious options. These factors have contributed to its underwhelming performance in the Indian market.
