Maruti Suzuki Reports Significant Export Growth Driven By Fronx & Jimny SUVs
Maruti Suzuki India has seen a notable rise in its export figures, largely driven by the Maruti Fronx and Jimny 5-door SUVs. These models have been instrumental in maintaining the company's status as India's top car and SUV exporter for four consecutive financial years. From April 2024 to January 2025, Maruti exported 2,72,423 vehicles, marking a 20% increase compared to the previous year.
The Fronx began its export journey from Maruti's Gujarat plant in July 2023. It is shipped to regions such as Latin America, the Middle East, and Africa, with Japan recently added to the list. In the first nine months of FY25, Fronx exports reached 48,491 units, making up 20% of Maruti's total passenger vehicle exports. This represents a remarkable 426% increase from the previous year when only 9,221 units were exported.

The Fronx model exported to Japan differs from its Indian version. It features a mild-hybrid 1.5-litre petrol engine with all-wheel-drive (AWD) technology and advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS). In India, it is available with a 1.2-litre petrol or a 1.0-litre turbo-petrol engine, both in front-wheel-drive configurations.
Meanwhile, the Jimny SUV has also experienced strong overseas demand. Initially manufactured as a three-door model for export since November 2020, Maruti introduced the five-door version in October 2023 for markets like Latin America and Africa. The reception has been positive in countries such as Mexico and Australia.
Suzuki Motor Corp launched the Jimny in Japan as the 'Nomad’ on January 30, 2025. Within just four days of opening bookings, over 50,000 orders were received. This overwhelming demand led Suzuki to temporarily pause further bookings. From April to December 2024, Maruti exported 38,716 Jimny SUVs, reflecting a substantial 295% increase from the previous year.
Japan has played a significant role in boosting Jimny exports similar to the Fronx. Between April and December 2024, combined exports of the Fronx and Jimny reached 87,207 units. This figure accounts for nearly 35% of Maruti's total passenger vehicle exports during this period.
Broader Export Success
Other models contributing significantly to Maruti's export success include the Baleno and Swift hatchbacks; S-Presso; Celerio; Dzire sedan; Grand Vitara mid-size SUV; and Ertiga MPV – all exported from India. With two months left in FY25, Maruti Suzuki has already surpassed its export numbers from FY24.
The company is on track to export nearly 3 lakh cars by the end of this fiscal year. This achievement solidifies its position as India's leading passenger vehicle exporter for another year.
Maruti Suzuki currently holds a significant share of India's export market at 43%. While overall car export numbers have declined over the past ten months, there has been a notable rise in utility vehicle and van segments. This shift aligns with global demand trends for these categories.
