Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara 7-Seater Variant To Be Launched In...

Maruti Suzuki is gearing up to introduce a new SUV later this year, as confirmed by chairman RC Bhargava during the FY2025 earnings conference. This launch will follow the e Vitara electric SUV, expected by September. Although Bhargava didn't provide specific details of the launch, it's anticipated that the new model will be a three-row version of the Grand Vitara SUV.

The upcoming three-row Grand Vitara, internally known as Y17, has been spotted testing on Indian roads. Despite being heavily camouflaged, it appears to feature design elements inspired by the e Vitara SUV. Notably, the front and rear bumpers and lighting signatures seem to have been influenced by the e Vitara's styling.

Engine Options & Platform

The Y17 SUV will share its platform with the standard Grand Vitara, utilising the global C platform. It is expected to retain the same engine options: a 104hp, 1.5-litre naturally aspirated engine and a 116hp, 1.5-litre petrol-hybrid engine. Both manual and automatic transmissions are likely to be available, along with an AWD system.

Spy images suggest that the Y17 will have a longer rear overhang to accommodate a third row of seats. This implies that Maruti might extend the wheelbase for additional space. While interior details remain unclear, it is anticipated that much of the dashboard and equipment from the Grand Vitara will be retained.

Design & Production

The three-row Grand Vitara will be manufactured at Maruti's new facility in Kharkhoda, Haryana. The vehicle's design is expected to incorporate elements from the e Vitara, particularly in its fascia. The centrally mounted touchscreen seen in previous spy shots suggests continuity in interior design.

Upon its release later this year, the Maruti Suzuki Y17 is not likely to compete with other three-row SUVs such as the Hyundai Alcazar, Tata Safari, and MG Hector Plus. These models are all extensions of their respective five-seat versions. This move aims to broaden Maruti's range of larger vehicles while addressing challenges in the budget segment.

A Toyota variant of this model is also anticipated following Maruti's launch. This collaboration aligns with previous joint ventures between Maruti Suzuki and Toyota in developing shared platforms and models for different markets.

e Vitara Launch Delayed, Again

The Maruti Suzuki e Vitara's launch in India has been delayed again, now expected by the end of September. Initially set for March after its Auto Expo 2025 unveiling, this marks the second delay. The first was due to battery and software issues. This electric SUV is Maruti's first EV, aiming to compete with models like Hyundai Creta Electric and Tata Curvv EV.

Production of the Maruti e Vitara will occur at Suzuki's Gujarat facility, with around 70,000 units planned for this year. Initially, half were meant for export to Japan and Europe. However, recent statements suggest a stronger focus on exports, possibly reducing domestic availability.

Despite the setbacks, Maruti Suzuki is positioning the e Vitara as a strong contender in India's growing EV market. Priced between Rs 20 lakh to Rs 30 lakh, it offers options for 49kWh and 61kWh battery packs. An all-wheel-drive variant might be available internationally but not in India.

Furthermore, Maruti Suzuki's chairman has emphasized an export-driven strategy for the e Vitara. This approach could impact domestic availability but highlights the company's focus on global markets. The automotive industry eagerly awaits further updates on how Maruti navigates these challenges before the launch.

The reasons behind the delay remain officially unaddressed by Maruti Suzuki. This lack of clarity also affects Toyota's Urban Cruiser EV release timeline since it shares its foundation with the e Vitara. The industry is keenly watching for more information on these developments.

DriveSpark Thinks

The launch of the 7-seater version of the Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara is expected to not only boost the sales for the Indo-Japanese automaker in India, but it will also help the company strengthen its presence in the higher segments.
