Maruti Suzuki Fronx Dissapoints At ANCAP Following Critical Failure

The Made in India Maruti Suzuki Fronx was recently crash tested by the Australian New Car Assessment Program (ANCAP), and it disappointed by scoring just one star out of five for safety. This vehicle was introduced in the Australian and New Zealand markets in mid-2025.

The variant tested by ANCAP was equipped with dual frontal airbags, side chest and head airbags for front passengers. Additional safety equipment includes an Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB), Lane Support System, Lane Keep Assist, Lane Departure Warning, Emergency Lane Keeping, Advanced Speed Assistance System, and Speed Sign Recognition System.

Critical Safety Issue Found

During the crash test, the Suzuki Fronx scored 19.30/40 for adult occupant protection, giving 48% protection. For child occupant protection, it scored 20.06/49 (40%), and for pedestrian protection, it scored 41.39/63 (65%). But the biggest issue was a critical failure, which resulted in a one-star ANCAP safety rating.

ANCAP observed that the Fronx tested did not have second-row side chest airbags or knee airbags. In addition, during the full-width frontal crash test, a rear passenger seat belt retractor failed, resulting in severe impact for the dummy. Seat belt failures in crash tests are rare and are treated as serious safety concerns.

Following the test, ANCAP reportedly advised Australian and New Zealand vehicle safety regulators to investigate the rear seat belt issue before allowing rear passengers to travel in the Fronx in those markets.

Despite this result, the Maruti Suzuki Fronx has performed well in other global safety assessments. It previously scored a 5-star rating in ASEAN NCAP and a 4-star rating in JNCAP (Japan). Crash test assessments and standards differ between programs, but a seat belt failure is a safety alarm that Suzuki will need to address.

In India, the Maruti Suzuki Fronx is sold at 6.85 lakh (ex-showroom). Toyota also sells a similarly made SUV called the Toyota Taisor, priced at 7.21 lakh (ex-showroom). The Fronx lineup in India includes petrol, Smart Hybrid, and S-CNG variants. According to official figures, the Fronx petrol manual variant returns a maximum claimed mileage of about 21.79 km/l, while the S-CNG version delivers an impressive 28.51 km/kg.
