Maruti Suzuki Escudo To Be The Automaker's First Model With Level-2 ADAS
The Maruti Suzuki Escudo is expected to be the first model from India's leading carmaker to feature Level-2 Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS). This new mid-size SUV will be available through Maruti's Arena dealerships. While currently referred to as "Escudo," the name might change closer to its release date (September 3 launch).
Maruti's decision to integrate Level-2 ADAS in the Escudo aligns with its broader strategy to enhance vehicle safety. The company already includes features like six airbags and electronic stability control in most entry-level models. The Escudo will also introduce Dolby Atmos technology, a first for any Maruti vehicle in India, alongside a powered tailgate.

Mid-Size SUV Market Dynamics
The mid-size SUV segment is highly competitive, with models like Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos, Tata Curvv, Honda Elevate, and MG Astor already offering Level-2 ADAS. In FY25, this segment saw sales of 6,09,516 units, representing 25.76% of the total SUV market. The Creta led with 1,94,871 units sold, followed by the Grand Vitara and Seltos.
The Escudo will share powertrains with the Grand Vitara and offer a four-wheel-drive option. This addition will make it the most technologically advanced vehicle available at Arena dealerships. Currently, Arena offers models like the Dzire sedan and hatchbacks such as Swift and WagonR.
Maruti's Expanding SUV Portfolio
Besides the Grand Vitara, Maruti's SUV lineup includes sub-4 metre models like Brezza, Fronx, and Jimny. While Brezza is sold through Arena dealerships, Fronx and Jimny are available at Nexa outlets. The introduction of Escudo marks another step in Maruti's expansion within the growing SUV market.
The overall SUV segment achieved volumes of 23,66,274 units in FY25, accounting for 54.34% of domestic car sales. With this growth trajectory, manufacturers are diversifying their offerings across various price points and sub-segments.
Challenges in Electric Vehicle Production
The launch of Escudo coincides with delays in Maruti's e Vitara electric vehicle due to a shortage of rare earth magnets. China's export restrictions on these magnets have affected production plans for the e Vitara at Maruti's Gujarat plant during the first half of this fiscal year.
The e Vitara is intended as a global model for export to over 100 countries including Japan and Europe. Despite these challenges, Maruti remains committed to expanding its presence in both traditional and electric vehicle markets.
