Maruti Suzuki Leads India's CNG Car Market With 71.60% Share
Maruti Suzuki leads the CNG car market in India, offering 17 models, with most available in CNG versions. In FY2025, the company aimed to attract more customers by enhancing mileage in its CNG cars. Out of 1,795,259 passenger vehicles sold that year, around 620,000 were CNG models. This indicates that one in three cars sold was a CNG vehicle.
Maruti Suzuki's dominance in the CNG sector is evident with a 71.60% market share by the end of 2024. Tata Motors follows with 16.13%, while Hyundai holds 10.04%. Toyota, collaborating with Maruti, has a notable presence with a 2.21% share. This competitive landscape highlights Maruti's stronghold in the market.

All Maruti vehicles, except the Jimny, Ignis, and Invicto, are available in CNG versions with factory-fitted kits. This extensive range and high demand have reinforced Maruti's position in the CNG market. The Celerio CNG model offers over 35 kilometers per kilogram, appealing to budget-conscious consumers seeking economical options.
Tata Motors has not disclosed specific CNG sales figures but reported a significant 35% year-on-year growth in this segment. The company ranks second in overall CNG sales volume and introduced twin-cylinder technology to address boot space issues in CNG vehicles, a feature now adopted by other manufacturers.
Tata stands out by offering automatic gear options for its Tiago and Tigor models with CNG powertrains. Many buyers prefer these cars for their automatic transmission and impressive mileage. This innovation sets Tata apart from competitors in the market.
Beyond its success with CNG vehicles, Maruti Suzuki sold 20,672 strong hybrid vehicles in FY2025. This accounted for 2.4% of total sales that year, marking a 27% increase from FY2024 figures. The Grand Vitara and Invicto models feature 1.5-liter strong hybrid powertrains, contributing to this growth.
