Maruti Suzuki Celerio Global NCAP Crash Test Results
Global NCAP has recently crash-tested the India-made Maruti Suzuki Celerio. The small hatchback performed decently, earning three stars out of five according to Global NCAP's testing standards. The variant tested was the model, which comes equipped with six airbags.
Richard Woods, Chief Executive Officer of Global NCAP, commented, "We are encouraged that Maruti Suzuki is committed to improving safety with five-star performance for new models like the Dzire and Victoris. However, it remains disappointing that some legacy models fall short." Previously, the Celerio's two-airbag variant scored only two stars. The improvement to three stars is mainly due to the addition of six airbags as standard equipment.

While Maruti Suzuki has raised the safety bar for the Celerio, it still falls short of a five-star rating. The car only scored three stars for adult occupant protection with a score of 18.04/34, and two stars for child occupant protection with a score of 18.57/49. It was a big disappointment for Maruti Suzuki as the Celerio is one of their best-selling hatchbacks.
Global NCAP also rated the Celerio's body shell as unstable, stating that it cannot withstand further loads in more severe crashes. The Celerio lacks several key advanced safety features, such as Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB), Speed Assist System, Lane Assist System, ISOFIX child seat anchors, Airbag cutoff switch, Integrated Child Restraint System (CRS), Side pelvis airbags, Side head airbags, and Front knee airbags

However, the Maruti Suzuki Celerio features standard safety equipment, including six airbags, ABS with EBD, Reverse parking sensors, a 3-point rear centre seat belt, and Hill Hold Assist. The car is built on Maruti Suzuki's HEARTECT platform, which is designed to improve the car's structural rigidity and crash performance.
The Celerio remains one of the best-selling hatchbacks in India, priced at around 4.69 lakh (ex-showroom). It is also among the most fuel-efficient petrol cars in the country, making it popular among urban buyers. Another car crash tested was the Maruti Suzuki Ciaz, which also disappointed by scoring only one star for adult occupant safety.
