Maruti Suzuki Plans To Launch Affordable MPV In India: All Details Here
In India, MPVs are gaining popularity due to their capacity to carry many passengers. This demand has led top manufacturers to offer MPV models. Maruti Suzuki, India's leading carmaker, currently sells two MPVs: the Ertiga and the XL6. However, these models are priced on the higher side, with the Ertiga starting at Rs 8.84 lakh and the XL6 at Rs 11.71 lakh, ex-showroom.
Maruti Suzuki is planning to introduce a more affordable MPV in India. This new model will be inspired by the Suzuki Spacia, a popular 'kei car' in Japan. The Spacia is compact, measuring just 3,395 mm in length, and features two rows of seats with a 660cc engine. However, Maruti Suzuki will modify these aspects for the Indian market.
The upcoming Indian version will be slightly longer yet remain under four meters. It will feature three rows of seats in a 2+3+2 configuration, accommodating seven passengers. Unlike its Japanese counterpart, the Indian model will have different engine options. A 1.2-litre ISG series petrol engine is anticipated for this version.
Maruti Suzuki has codenamed this new model YDB. Although it won't include sliding doors like the Japanese Spacia, it aims to offer high mileage. A CNG engine option might be available alongside the petrol variant. If so, the CNG version could achieve around 32 km per kg.
This new MPV is expected to compete directly with the Renault Triber in India. Maruti Suzuki might price it at approximately Rs 6 lakh, making it attractive to Indian buyers. Despite its affordability, it will not be sold through Arena showrooms but rather through Nexa showrooms, which focus on premium vehicles.
The launch of this MPV is anticipated in 2026 and has already generated significant interest among potential customers in India. By offering a competitively priced vehicle with practical features, Maruti Suzuki aims to capture a substantial share of the growing MPV market in India.
