Maruti Suzuki India has dispatched 5.18 lakh vehicles via Indian Railways in FY 2024-25. This accounts for 24.3% of its total dispatches, marking the highest ever through railways in a financial year. The company highlights the environmental benefits of rail transport, which is both low-emission and energy-efficient, while also alleviating road congestion.

Maruti Suzuki serves over 600 cities across India by dispatching vehicles to more than 20 hubs using railways. Additionally, the port locations of Mundra and Pipavav, used for exports, are also connected by rail. This extensive network supports the company's commitment to reducing carbon emissions.

Focus on Sustainability and Expansion

Hisashi Takeuchi, MD & CEO of Maruti Suzuki India Limited, emphasised that reducing carbon emissions is a key priority for the company. This focus extends to both their products and operations. Maruti Suzuki was the first in India to receive an Automobile-Freight-Train-Operator license in 2013, enabling them to dispatch nearly 24 lakh vehicles by rail since then.

The company aims to increase its share of vehicle dispatches through railways to 35% by FY 2030-31. This goal aligns with their broader sustainability objectives and reflects their ongoing commitment to eco-friendly practices.

Historical Growth in Rail Dispatches

Maruti Suzuki began using railways for vehicle dispatches in 2013. In FY 2014-15, they dispatched 65,700 vehicles, followed by 76,441 cars in the next financial year, contributing to 5% of total dispatches. By FY17, this number rose to 87,747 cars, accounting for a 5.5% contribution.

The company crossed the one lakh mark in railway dispatches for the first time in FY18 with a total of 1,10,377 units. This represented a contribution rate of 6.2%. The consistent growth underscores Maruti Suzuki's strategic shift towards more sustainable transportation methods.

Environmental Impact and Future Plans

In FY25 alone, Maruti Suzuki claims to have saved approximately 180,660 tonnes of CO2 emissions and conserved around 63 million litres of fuel through its railway dispatch strategy. These savings highlight the significant environmental benefits associated with increased reliance on rail transport.

The company's future plans include further expansion of its solar capacity at Kharkhoda and Manesar plants. This initiative complements their efforts to enhance sustainability across various aspects of their operations.
