Mahindra Surpasses Hyundai To Become India's Second-Largest Automaker In February 2025
In February 2025, Mahindra showcased an impressive surge in the automotive market, overtaking Hyundai to become India's second-largest-selling automaker. This achievement was largely fueled by a remarkable 19 percent increase in domestic sales of SUVs, totaling 50,420 vehicles. This performance not only underscores Mahindra's growing dominance in the SUV market but also highlights the company's overall strength in domestic automobile sales.
Mahindra’s total automotive sales, which include vehicles sold both domestically and abroad, reached 83,702 units in February 2025. This represents a 15 percent increase compared to the previous year, building on the momentum of an 18 percent growth in domestic passenger vehicle sales in January, where 50,659 units were sold. These figures emphasize the company’s consistent growth and strong market presence.

Hyundai, on the other hand, experienced a downturn in the same period, with a total of 58,727 vehicles sold, of which 47,727 were within the domestic market. This marked a significant decrease from January 2025, where Hyundai had reported 65,603 total sales and 54,003 domestic sales. This decline indicates challenges for Hyundai in maintaining its market position against rising competition.
Despite the contrasting sales performances in the domestic market, both Mahindra and Hyundai exhibited strong export results in February 2025. Mahindra reported a substantial 99 percent increase in its export volume, shipping 3,061 units overseas. Hyundai, while having a larger export volume of 11,000 units, saw a modest year-on-year growth of 6.8 percent in its export performance. These figures reveal a positive outlook for both companies in the international market.
SUV Models Propel Mahindra's Growth
The surge in Mahindra's sales can be attributed to the strategic introduction of new and updated SUV models throughout 2024. The company launched several vehicles, including the Thar Roxx, XUV 3XO, and Bolero Neo Plus, significantly expanding its SUV portfolio. Additionally, Mahindra began its foray into the electric vehicle (EV) market with models like the BE 6 and XEV 9e, indicating a forward-thinking approach to automotive innovation.
In contrast, Hyundai's SUV launches in 2024 were limited to refreshes like the facelifted Creta and Alcazar. While the Creta continues to hold a strong position in the mid-size SUV segment, Hyundai's overall SUV lineup, which includes models like the Venue, Tucson, and Alcazar, could not match the pace set by Mahindra's aggressive product rollout.
Mahindra's diverse range of SUVs, including popular models such as the Thar, XUV700, Bolero, and Scorpio N, further fortified its position in the market before the introduction of five new SUV models in 2024. This variety has allowed Mahindra to cater to a wide array of customer preferences across different SUV segments.
DriveSpark Thinks
February 2025 marked a significant shift in the Indian automotive industry, with Mahindra establishing itself as a dominant force, particularly in the SUV market, and surpassing Hyundai in domestic sales. The strategic expansion of Mahindra's SUV lineup, coupled with its entry into the EV market, played a crucial role in this achievement. Both companies, however, continue to perform strongly in exports, indicating their global competitiveness and appeal.
