Mahindra & Mahindra Reports Remarkable Growth In Car Sales: Surpasses Hyundai & Tata
Mahindra & Mahindra has been making significant strides in the Indian automobile market. The company, which initially focused on commercial vehicles and agricultural equipment, has expanded its reach into car manufacturing. In February 2025, Mahindra surprised many by securing the second position in car sales, surpassing Hyundai and Tata Motors. This marked a notable shift from its usual fourth-place ranking behind Maruti Suzuki, Hyundai, and Tata.
In March 2025, Mahindra & Mahindra sold a total of 83,894 vehicles. This figure includes both domestic sales and exports and represents a 23% increase compared to March 2024. The total sales encompass cars as well as commercial vehicles. Specifically, Mahindra sold 50,835 cars last month, with 48,004 of these sold within India.

Compared to March 2024, when Mahindra sold 40,631 cars domestically, there was an 18% rise in domestic car sales in March 2025. This growth highlights Mahindra's increasing influence in the Indian car market. The company's commercial vehicle sales also saw a boost, with 23,951 units sold domestically last month.
Mahindra's commercial vehicles are categorised based on weight: under 2 tons, between 2 and 3.5 tons, and over 3.5 tons. In March 2025, Mahindra sold 3,530 units of vehicles weighing less than 2 tons. However, this was a decrease from the previous year when they sold 4,012 units in this category.
The sales of commercial vehicles weighing between 2 and 3.5 tons showed a positive trend. Mahindra sold 18,958 units in March 2025 compared to just 15,387 units in March 2024. This represents a significant increase of 23%. However, heavy commercial vehicles over 3.5 tons experienced a slight decline with only 1,463 units sold last month compared to 1,531 units in March last year.
Mahindra's three-wheeler vehicle sales have seen remarkable growth. In March 2025, the company sold a total of 7,752 three-wheelers compared to just 5,279 units in the same month last year. This indicates an increase of more than half in this segment.
Export Growth for Mahindra
Despite being relatively low in numbers, Mahindra's exports have shown impressive growth. In March 2025, the company exported a total of 4,143 vehicles from India. This is a significant jump from the previous year's export figure of only 1,573 vehicles.
The export figures include cars, commercial vehicles, and three-wheelers. This diverse range highlights Mahindra's efforts to expand its presence internationally by exporting various types of vehicles.
Challenges and Opportunities
While Mahindra has made notable progress in several areas, challenges remain. The decline in sales of commercial vehicles under two tons is one such area that requires attention. Additionally, there was a slight drop in car sales in March compared to January and February.
Overall, Mahindra & Mahindra continues to strengthen its position in both domestic and international markets. The company's focus on expanding its product range and improving sales figures is evident from recent trends.
