Mahindra Clarifies Stance On E20 Fuel - Warranty Still Valid

Indian SUV specialist Mahindra has issued a clarification on the use of E20 fuel in its petrol-powered vehicles. The move follows concerns among customers about performance, drivability, and warranty coverage after the rollout of ethanol-blended petrol fuels across several regions in India.

E20 is a blend of 20 percent ethanol with petrol. It has been introduced nationwide in phases, with availability expanding steadily. While the government is pushing the adoption of biofuels to reduce oil imports and emissions, motorists have reported mixed experiences since the new blend appeared.

Drivers of earlier vehicles from various brands have spoken about a slight drop in fuel economy and occasional hesitation under acceleration when using E20. In some cases, owners also worried about the potential impact of ethanol on fuel system components such as seals and hoses.

Mahindra addressed these concerns by confirming that its engines are fully compliant with gasoline standards and safe to operate with E20 fuel. Vehicles manufactured after April 1, 2025, are specially calibrated for E20, ensuring consistent acceleration and fuel efficiency during daily usage.

For vehicles produced before that date, Mahindra explained that they remain safe to drive with E20 fuel. However, the company acknowledged that some drivers may notice minor variations in acceleration or mileage. These differences would depend largely on individual driving habits and conditions.

The company emphasised that all warranty commitments will remain valid under E20 usage. This was a key reassurance for customers who feared warranty disputes if ethanol-blended fuel caused changes in vehicle behaviour or affected long-term durability of mechanical parts.

The broader transition to E20 has raised questions across the automotive sector. Many automakers have upgraded engines to handle ethanol blends, but customer experiences have shown variability. This prompted leading manufacturers, including Mahindra, to publicly clarify their stance on compatibility and warranties.

Here is Mahindra's full official statement:

"Mahindra engines are fully compliant with existing gasoline standards and all our vehicles can be operated safely with E20 fuel. Vehicles produced post April 1, 2025 are specially calibrated for E20 fuel to ensure acceleration and fuel efficiency. Earlier produced vehicles whilst being completely safe to drive could see a minor variation in either acceleration or fuel efficiency depending on driving behaviour.

As a responsible OEM, Mahindra will honour all warranty commitments to its customers on account of E20 fuel usage in our vehicles. Mahindra has always been at the forefront of supporting and embracing government initiatives surrounding alternative fuels, especially biofuels, whenever mandated. We believe in contributing to a sustainable future through innovative automotive solutions."
