Maharashtra's Tax Reduction On Electric Vehicles Aims To Enhance Affordability & Sales
In a bid to lead the charge towards sustainable transportation, Maharashtra has taken a bold step by slashing taxes on electric vehicles (EVs), aiming to make them a more attractive option for consumers. By eliminating the additional 6% tax that was previously levied on EVs, the state government has paved the way for a significant price reduction in electric vehicles. This policy adjustment is anticipated to spur sales of electric vehicles, contributing to a cleaner environment and promoting eco-friendly transportation solutions.
This tax reduction strategy by Maharashtra is seen as a pivotal move to encourage the uptake of luxury electric vehicles, which often come with a hefty price tag due to various taxes imposed by both central and state governments. These taxes are a major revenue source but also make luxury vehicles less accessible to the average buyer. As a result of this tax cut, the price of premium electric vehicles has seen a notable decrease. For example, the cost of the Rolls Royce Spectre in Mumbai has been reduced from ₹8.2 crore to ₹7.8 crore, saving buyers around ₹45 lakhs. Likewise, the BMW iX1, previously priced at ₹49 lakhs ex-showroom, now comes with a reduced tax load, making it more competitive against traditional fuel variants. This price adjustment is expected to make electric vehicles more appealing to a broader audience, thereby increasing their market presence.
Maharashtra's initiative is part of a larger effort to bolster electric vehicle sales and mitigate pollution levels. The state aims to boost the market share of electric vehicles, which currently stands at only 2%, with a target to reach 30% by 2030. Despite challenges such as inadequate charging infrastructure and limited vehicle range, reducing the prices of EVs is seen as a crucial step towards achieving wider adoption.
The Indian automobile market, the third-largest globally, has seen a steady rise in electric vehicle sales, led by domestic manufacturers such as Tata and Mahindra.
