Maharashtra's New EV Policy Reflects Strong EV Adoption: All Details Here
Maharashtra has introduced a new EV Policy 2025, aiming to boost electric mobility. The policy, effective for five years, allocates Rs 1,993 crore, marking a 114% increase from the previous policy's Rs 930 crore. The state targets a 30% EV adoption by 2030. This initiative reflects Maharashtra's commitment to sustainable transport and its growing role in India's electric vehicle landscape.
Incentives For Electric Vehicles
Under the new policy, incentives of up to Rs 2 lakh are available for electric four-wheelers used for transport. E-buses can receive benefits worth Rs 20 lakh. These incentives apply to up to 25,000 four-wheelers and 1,500 buses. Unlike the previous policy, which capped benefits at Rs 1.75 lakh for private vehicles, this one focuses on commercial use.

Tax Exemptions & Toll-Free Travel
All EVs registered in Maharashtra will continue to enjoy exemptions from motor vehicle tax and registration fees. Additionally, travel is toll-free for passenger EVs and buses on select expressways like Mumbai-Pune Expressway and Mumbai-Nagpur Samruddhi Mahamarg. This move aims to further encourage zero-emission mobility across the state.
Charging Infrastructure Development
The policy mandates charging stations every 25 km on highways to ease range anxiety among EV users. Government offices must have at least one charging station in their parking spaces. New residential buildings need one community charging point, while new commercial buildings must allocate half of their parking space for EVs; older ones require 20%.
Maharashtra's Role in India's EV Market
Maharashtra ranks second in India for EV sales as of FY2025. The state sold 2,46,221 units, making up 12.52% of India's total EV sales. It leads in e-2-wheelers and electric cars with significant contributions from local manufacturers like Tata Motors and Mahindra. In FY2025 alone, Maharashtra sold 17,133 electric passenger vehicles.
In FY2025, Maharashtra accounted for an impressive share of India's e-vehicle market: it led with an 18% share in e-2-wheelers (211,880 units) and held a dominant position in electric cars with a 16% share (17,133 units). The state's contribution was also notable in e-buses with a 24% share (2,104 units).
Over the past decade since 2015, Maharashtra has seen the sale of over seven lakh EVs according to Vahan data. This growth underscores the state's pivotal role in advancing electric mobility within India. With several major manufacturers based here, Maharashtra continues to be a hub for innovation and production in the EV sector.
