BEDEO Issues Urgent Warning On Large Van Fleet Sector's Ability To Meet Net-Zero Targets

BEDEO has made a direct appeal to UK Government officials, urging immediate action to support the large van fleet sector in meeting net-zero targets. Under the UK's Zero Emission Vehicle (ZEV) mandate, 70% of new vans sold in Great Britain must be zero-emission by 2030, with a complete phase-out of diesel light commercial vehicle (LCV) sales by 2035.

Currently, battery-electric vans (BEVs) in the 3.5–4.25-tonne category hold just a 0.5% market share, while those over 3.5 tonnes account for 5.3%, which is lower than in 2023. BEDEO forecasts that even the most environmentally conscious fleet owners will struggle to convert more than half of their fleet to zero emissions due to range, cost, and payload challenges.

The founder and CEO of BEDEO, Osman Boyner, highlighted the disparity between electric and diesel vans: "Electric vans just don’t have the same payload as diesel – it’s not even close." He noted that fleet managers are willing to convert up to 70% of diesel vans but require improvements in cost and performance first.

BEDEO's Reborn Electric solutions have proven effective in real-world scenarios. The RE-100 Range Extender offers over 62 miles of fully electric driving per charge while maintaining the original diesel engine's performance. However, payload limitations remain a concern for operators choosing retrofitting as a greener alternative.

In its open letter, BEDEO outlines three policy changes needed to support retrofit adoption: inclusion of Range Extender technologies in Alternative Fuelled Vehicle (AFV) grant programmes; amendments to B licence weight limits to include Range Extender vehicles; and formal recognition of retrofit solutions as viable pathways to net-zero.

BEDEO has also reached out to key government figures like Heidi Alexander and Ed Miliband for clarification on why Range Extender technology is allowed for London black cabs but not for goods transport vehicles under similar principles.

Growing Demand for Retrofitting Solutions

The demand for BEDEO's retrofit technology is increasing, with fleet operators expressing interest in purchasing 500 retrofitted vehicles. This highlights growing confidence in these solutions as effective means to reduce CO₂ emissions and operational costs without replacing existing vehicles.

BEDEO continues its commitment to sustainable mobility by expanding into marine and aviation markets. The company aims to make a significant impact on decarbonisation in city centres and accelerate the transition to fleet electrification through innovative solutions like Reborn Electric.
