Lamborghini Might Save Internal Combustion Engines Forever: Here's How

As the automotive world shifts towards electrification, Lamborghini is exploring synthetic fuels to sustain internal combustion engines (ICE). With stricter global regulations and a growing focus on electric vehicles (EVs), Lamborghini's leadership views synthetic fuels as a potential saviour for traditional performance engineering and possibly the brand itself.

Chief Technical Officer Rouven Mohr highlighted that e-fuels could be the "saviour of the combustion engine," aligning with Lamborghini's performance standards. He noted that the new engine delivers "optimal efficiency and performance" whether using traditional petrol or carbon-neutral synthetic alternatives. This approach signals Lamborghini's long-term commitment to maintaining its ICE legacy.

Synthetic Fuels: A Future for Internal Combustion Engines

Synthetic fuels, or e-fuels, are created by combining green hydrogen from renewable energy sources with carbon dioxide. This process results in a combustible liquid similar to petrol but with significantly reduced lifecycle emissions. Such fuels allow ICE vehicles to operate without increasing atmospheric CO2, aligning them with future emission regulations.

Despite the inevitability of electrification, Mohr believes EVs cannot yet match the emotional thrill of high-revving combustion engines. He anticipates that future generations might cherish traditional ICE-powered cars, much like today's enthusiasts admire classic muscle cars and analogue sports machines.

Industry Collaboration on E-Fuel Development

Lamborghini's confidence in synthetic fuels is bolstered by its association with the Volkswagen Group, which is advancing e-fuel production through Porsche. Since late 2022, Porsche has collaborated with Highly Innovative Fuels (HIF) in Chile to produce synthetic fuel using water, wind power, and carbon dioxide. The aim is to create a carbon-neutral fuel suitable for legacy combustion engines in a stricter regulatory environment.

Porsche, like Lamborghini, seeks to preserve ICE where it matters - notably in the iconic 911 model, which continues to run on petrol while an all-electric version remains unavailable for now. Despite high production costs, affluent customers are unlikely to shy away from synthetic fuel if it means retaining driving dynamics and emotional appeal.

A Luxury Niche Rather Than a Mass Solution

The path to widespread adoption of synthetic fuels remains lengthy due to high production costs and limited global infrastructure. While luxury carmakers like Ferrari, Bentley, and Bugatti have shown interest in e-fuels, their mass-market potential remains uncertain. Companies such as Toyota, Mazda, and Subaru are exploring hydrogen combustion as an alternative but have yet to achieve tangible results.
