The imminent launch of the Kia Carens facelift in India is creating a buzz, with the electric version set to debut shortly thereafter. The updated model will boast notable changes to both its exterior and interior, aligning it more closely with SUV aesthetics. This makeover is part of Kia's strategy to refresh its lineup, with the Carens EV incorporating design elements distinct to electric vehicles.
Spy images reveal the facelifted Carens will feature a higher bonnet, lending it a robust SUV appearance. The redesigned headlights and daytime running lamps will draw inspiration from the Syros model, while the back will sport vertically aligned tail-lights connected by an LED light strip. The vehicle will also roll out with new dual-tone alloy wheels, though they will retain the 16-inch size of the current model.
The Carens EV is expected to mirror the facelift's design, with modifications tailored for an electric vehicle, such as a sealed grille and wheels designed for better aerodynamics. The interior of the Carens facelift will likely share many elements with the Seltos, including the dashboard layout and controls. High-end models are anticipated to feature Level 2 ADAS and a 360-degree camera, enhancing safety and convenience.
Despite the shift towards electric, the Carens will continue to offer its current range of engines. These include a 1.5-litre petrol engine, a 1.5-litre turbo-petrol engine, and a 1.5-litre diesel engine, each paired with specific gearbox options. The interior of the Carens EV will closely resemble that of the facelift but is expected to include unique trims and highlights to distinguish it as an electric model.
The Carens EV will share its powertrain with the Hyundai Creta Electric, suggesting it might come with similar battery options and potentially lower range due to its heavier build. The pricing for the facelifted Carens is anticipated to be in the range of Rs 11 lakh to Rs 20 lakh, positioning it competitively within its segment. It will continue to rival models like the Maruti Ertiga and Toyota Rumion, while its higher variants will compete with the Hyundai Alcazar, Tata Safari, and MG Hector.
Kia India has confirmed that alongside the new facelift and electric versions, the current Carens model will remain available. This strategy mirrors Honda's approach with the Amaze, offering both the third-gen and second-gen models concurrently. The Carens EV, expected to be priced between Rs 18 lakh and Rs 25 lakh, may overlap with higher-end models like the BYD eMax 7 in terms of price.
