Kia America Celebrates National Launch Of IONNA Charging Network With Over 1,000 New Charging Bays

IONNA, a joint venture by major automakers like BMW, General Motors, and Toyota, has moved from public beta to a full-scale national release. This marks a significant milestone for the American road as eight global automakers gather at the first IONNA Rechargery in Apex, NC. The event also celebrates the opening of their new headquarters and Customer Experience Lab in Durham, NC.

After extensive testing in late 2024, IONNA's network was stress-tested with over 4,400 charging sessions across more than 80 vehicle models. Nearly 63 thousand kilowatts of energy were dispensed during this phase. This rigorous process allowed IONNA to refine its hardware and software, preparing it for nationwide expansion.

IONNA is set to open over 100 contracted sites nationwide. New Rechargeries are already operational in Houston, Texas and Abilene, Kansas. Willcox, Arizona will soon join six other locations currently under construction. The new headquarters and customer experience lab will focus on ongoing testing and innovation.

The company plans to introduce over 1,000 ultra-fast charging bays capable of delivering 400 kW by 2025. This initiative is not just about infrastructure; it's an investment in American jobs and manufacturing. Over the next five years, each of the planned 30,000 charging bays will create new employment opportunities across the nation.

Starting in Q1 2025 at Garner, NC, IONNA will implement AI-powered computer vision and sensor fusion technology for automated grab & go services. In collaboration with Amazon's "Just Walk Out" technology, these retail spaces will offer drivers refreshments without checkout lines.

IONNA aims to set a new standard for interoperability and ease of use by expanding Plug & Charge technology to include more automakers throughout the year. Features like smart reservations and AI-powered routing will be enabled through deep vehicle head unit integration.

Focus on Customer Choice

IONNA is transforming EV charging by partnering with top retail brands and employing a dedicated workforce. Their goal is to provide an alternative that drivers choose willingly rather than out of necessity.
