Jammu Administration Issues Ban On Unauthorized Vehicle Modifications
In India, vehicle modifications are illegal, yet many car and SUV owners still engage in this practice. Accessories and aftermarket fitments are readily available in numerous cities. In mountainous regions, SUVs often sport aftermarket bumpers and horns. Recently, the Jammu Administration has taken a firm stance by completely banning automotive accessories.
The new regulation prohibits the sale, purchase, storage, or display of motor vehicle accessories that could be used for unauthorized modifications. This order was issued by Jammu District Magistrate Sachin Kumar Vaishya and is effective immediately within the Jammu district's jurisdiction.

Prohibition Under Motor Vehicles Act
The ban falls under Section 52 of the Motor Vehicles Act, which addresses alterations to vehicles. It prohibits modifications that would alter a vehicle's registered specifications from those provided by manufacturers. Changes to core components like engines or bodies are illegal.
"In exercise of powers conferred upon me under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, 2023, I do hereby order that the sale, purchase, storage, distribution, and display for sale of all motor vehicle accessories which are intended or likely to be used for unauthorised modifications are hereby prohibited within the territorial jurisdiction of District Jammu, with immediate effect," reads the district magistrate's ruling.
Specific Accessories Targeted
The new ruling covers oversized tyres, pressure horns, musical horns, metallic bumpers, high-intensity halogen lights, tinted window films, roof rail spoilers, and modified exhausts. These items are now illegal to sell or use for unauthorized modifications in Jammu.
Recently in Jammu, traffic police seized numerous modified vehicles. Over 100 were confiscated in one day alone. This crackdown appears to have prompted swift legal action. Kashmir has seen a rise in rash driving and underage riding cases due to lax enforcement.
Enforcement Measures
The ruling instructs Jammu's Senior Superintendent of Police and Traffic Senior Superintendent to enforce it effectively. A joint committee will conduct periodic inspections to ensure compliance and submit fortnightly reports to the District Magistrate's Office.
Individuals or establishments violating this ruling will face penalties under the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita 2023 and Motor Vehicles Act 1988. The new regulation aims at enhancing public safety and security by preventing unauthorized vehicle modifications.
