Maruti Suzuki Retains Market Leadership: Hyundai & Tata Motors Report YoY Decline

In June 2025, the Indian automotive market experienced a mixed performance, with car retail sales showing a 2.45% year-on-year (YoY) increase. However, month-on-month (MoM) sales saw a decline of 1.49%. The Federation of Automotive Dealers Association (FADA) reported that while various segments showed YoY growth, they all faced MoM declines.

Maruti Suzuki maintained its leading position in the market with 1,16,544 units sold in June 2025. This was a slight increase from the 1,15,919 units sold in June 2024. The company held a significant market share of 39.15%. Mahindra followed in second place with retail sales of 40,919 units last month, marking an increase from the previous year's 36,741 units.

Car Retail Sales Performance

Hyundai and Tata Motors experienced a decline in their YoY retail sales figures. Hyundai's sales dropped to 38,306 units from the previous year's 39,201 units. Tata Motors saw its sales decrease to 34,930 units from 38,157 units YoY. Despite this decline, Tata is optimistic about its upcoming Scarlet sub-4-meter SUV and other launches planned by 2030.

Toyota's retail sales improved to 22,543 units last month compared to 19,531 units in June 2024. This increase raised Toyota's market share to 7.57%. Kia India also saw an improvement in sales with 18,005 units sold last month compared to the previous year's figure of 16,821 units.

Luxury Car Segment Insights

The luxury car segment showed some positive trends as well. Mercedes Benz increased its retail sales to 1,390 units last month from the previous year's figure of 1,214 units. BMW India also saw an uptick in sales with numbers rising to 1,202 units from the previous year's total of 1,058 units.

Skoda Auto and MG Motor both reported YoY growth in their sales figures. Skoda's sales rose to 7,661 units from the previous year's total of 5,705 units. MG Motor also experienced growth with sales increasing to 4,954 units from last year's figure of 3,841 units.

Challenges and Opportunities

Despite these gains across various brands and segments, some companies faced challenges. Honda's car sales fell significantly to just 3,859 units last month compared to June 2024's total of 4,342 units. Renault India also saw a drop in retail sales numbers down to just over half at only around two-thirds when compared against their prior year performance.

Nissan Motor experienced a decline in its retail numbers as well; however other brands like Jaguar and BYD India witnessed growth within this period too despite overall industry challenges such as strong rains affecting dealership footfalls or liquidity crunches impacting consumer spending habits.
