The recent trade agreement between India and the UK marks a significant milestone, promising to energize the automotive industry across both nations. This deal is set to make imported vehicles from the UK substantially cheaper in India, while simultaneously opening the door for Indian car and motorcycle manufacturers to benefit from reduced tariffs.
Notably, this agreement includes a dramatic reduction in tariffs on "high-end cars" from the UK to India, dropping from 100 percent to merely 10 percent. Additionally, it has been highlighted that India will see tariffs eliminated on approximately 99 percent of tariff lines, which encompasses nearly the total trade value between the two countries.
Impact on British Luxury Car Prices in India
Luxury car brands like JLR, Aston Martin, Bentley, and Rolls-Royce, known for their manufacturing bases in the UK and their subsequent imports into India, stand to gain considerably. Moreover, Indian carmakers and bike manufacturers are poised to leverage the advantages of this agreement. Companies like Mahindra, Royal Enfield, TVS, Bajaj, and international manufacturers such as JLR, Maruti Suzuki, and Toyota, which have production facilities in India, are likely to see benefits. This agreement opens up the UK market for their made-in-India models, potentially boosting exports.
Particularly, Mahindra's plans to introduce electric vehicles like the BE 6 and XUV 9e in the UK could see a competitive pricing strategy, thanks to the free trade agreement. Rajesh Jejurikar, Mahindra's executive director and CEO for Auto and Farm Sectors, mentioned, "We do have a plan to go to the EU with our electric vehicles at some point in the future, but that will be in a calibrated way. We will do right-hand-drive EVs first and then move to left-hand-drive." Similarly, Maruti and Toyota are set to benefit as their first EVs, the e Vitara and Urban Cruiser, are being produced for both domestic and export markets, including the UK.
Additionally, the deal is expected to have a positive impact on the pricing of limited edition bikes in India, such as the Triumph Rocket 3 Evel Knievel edition, which will likely see a reduction in price. Indian bike makers like Royal Enfield, TVS, and Bajaj also stand to gain, with opportunities to export models to the UK at more competitive prices. Royal Enfield's entire portfolio, for instance, is already available in the UK, presenting further opportunities for expansion.
