Porsche Aims For Victory At IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship Round In Laguna Seca

The WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca in Monterey, California, will host the fourth round of the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship on May 11. Porsche's factory team will field two 659 PS (485 kW) Porsche 963 cars in the top GTP category. Additionally, JDC-Miller MotorSports will enter another hybrid prototype from Weissach. Two Porsche 911 GT3 R cars will compete in both GT classes during this two-hour, 40-minute race.

Porsche Penske Motorsport is set to compete on two continents this weekend. While they tackle the FIA World Endurance Championship at Spa-Francorchamps in Belgium, their focus remains strong on extending their lead across all championship categories. The team has already secured victories at Daytona, Sebring, and Long Beach this season.

Laguna Seca is a significant track for Porsche, having achieved notable success there. Last year, the No. 6 Porsche triumphed on this challenging circuit. "We’ve enjoyed an incredibly good run in this year’s IMSA series," said Thomas Laudenbach, Vice President of Porsche Motorsport. "The motivation within our team is at an absolute high."

Felipe Nasr and Nick Tandy will drive the No. 7 Porsche 963, having dominated the first three races of the year. Meanwhile, Matt Campbell and Mathieu Jaminet aim for their first win of the season in the sister car. "Victory has been just out of reach," said Jaminet about their recent performances.

In addition to the factory entries, JDC-Miller MotorSports will field a hybrid prototype with drivers Gianmaria Bruni and Tijmen van der Helm. The team currently ranks ninth in the championship standings. "I’m really looking forward to returning to Laguna Seca," Bruni expressed excitement about racing on this iconic track.

The GTD Pro class sees AO Racing introducing "Roxy," a pink Porsche 911 GT3 R replacing "Rexy." Klaus Bachler and Laurin Heinrich will share driving duties for AO Racing's entry. Wright Motorsports will also compete with Adam Adelson and Elliott Skeer aiming to replicate last year's podium finish.

Porsche's Strategic Approach

Porsche's strategy at Laguna Seca involves careful consideration of tire management and pit stop efficiency due to the track's unique characteristics. Urs Kuratle, Director Factory Motorsport LMDh, noted that these factors are crucial for success on this rollercoaster circuit.

"Execution has been a big part of our results so far," stated Jonathan Diuguid, Managing Director of Porsche Penske Motorsport. The team aims to maintain pressure on competitors as they return to Laguna Seca with their pair of 963 cars.

Track Features and Challenges

The WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca spans 2.258 miles with 11 turns, including the famous "Corkscrew." This section is known for its steep banking and challenging overtaking opportunities. The track surface offers good grip but wind-blown sand increases tire wear.

Porsche Cars North America recently announced its sponsorship as the "Official Car of WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca." This partnership includes plans for a Porsche Driving Center launching in 2026 at this legendary venue.

Drivers' Perspectives

Felipe Nasr praised Laguna Seca's unique atmosphere and fan engagement: "Fans unfailingly create a fantastic atmosphere." Adam Adelson highlighted its storied history: "Everyone senses this as soon as they enter the facility."

Klaus Bachler reflected on past successes: "Laguna Seca has a fantastic track layout set in a stunning landscape." He expressed confidence in AO Racing's preparation with their new entry "Roxy."
