Hyundai To Launch Made-For-India Compact Electric SUV In 2027

South Korean carmaker Hyundai is preparing to introduce a compact electric SUV in 2027 that will be designed specifically for the Indian market. Hyundai revealed this news at its 2025 CEO Investor Day event.

Hyundai has also confirmed that the new A+ electric SUV will focus on local requirements, ensuring that its design, features, and sourcing meet the needs of the Indian market.

The new electric SUV will mark the first time Hyundai will develop an electric vehicle for India from the ground up. Unlike earlier launches that were global products adapted for the market, this SUV will rely heavily on India-sourced parts and a localised supply chain to control costs.

Positioned below the upcoming Creta EV, the compact electric SUV will be aimed at city-focused buyers. Hyundai is targeting a segment where affordability, practicality, and ease of use take priority over premium positioning, making it a direct fit for everyday urban use.

Globally, Hyundai already has the Inster, a small electric SUV offering up to 355 kilometres of range under WLTP testing. While the India-specific model will differ in design and positioning, it is expected to share similarities in size and overall purpose.

The new made-for-India EV is expected to be based on the Hyundai-Kia K1 platform, which will also underpin the upcoming Kia Syros EV. We expect the new Hyundai electric SUV to deliver a driving range of at least 300 kilometres in real-world conditions. We also expect it to feature equipment such as a digital instrument cluster, connected car technology, and six airbags as standard.

By focusing on an India-first design, Hyundai's targeting of our EV space will see it try and one up the likes of Tata and Mahindra, who are currently helping charge up the EV revolution in India. Both brands have already confirmed new models in the affordable compact SUV space, setting the stage for increased competition.

Local battery sourcing and extensive localisation are expected to help in keeping the overall cost of the Hyundai EV competitive with its upcoming rivals, which will be key for a segment that always looks at value-for-money options.

Hyundai's upcoming electric SUV for India is part of a broader strategy to strengthen its EV lineup in India. Alongside premium offerings like the Ioniq 5 and the Creta EV, this compact model will give the company access to a higher-volume market.
