Hyundai Nexo Unveils Next Gen Nexo HCEV At Seoul Mobility Show - 700km Range
Hyundai has unveiled its second-generation Nexo hydrogen fuel cell SUV, introducing advancements in hydrogen fuel cell technology aimed at delivering a significantly enhanced driving range, superior safety features, and boosted performance. The reveal occurred at the Seoul Mobility Show in Korea, marking a significant step forward in Hyundai's commitment to hydrogen fuel technology.
The new Hyundai Nexo, which draws inspiration from the 2024 Initium concept, features Hyundai's innovative 'Art of Steel’ design language, distinguishing it from its battery electric vehicle (BEV) and internal combustion engine (ICE) counterparts. This move underscores Hyundai's ambition to lead in the hydrogen fuel cell vehicle (FCEV) sector by offering a compelling alternative to conventional fuel and electric vehicles.

Design & Features
The exterior of the new Nexo echoes the design cues of the Initium concept, including the signature 'HTWO' (Hydrogen for Humanity) front and rear lights and H-shaped panels on the bumpers, finished in a distinctive silver shade, contrasting with the car's black cladding. The vehicle's front and rear are adorned with four HTWO lights that represent an 'H’ in Morse code, placed above the traditional logo. This design is not only aesthetically pleasing but also symbolizes Hyundai's commitment to hydrogen as a sustainable energy source.
The Nexo retains aerodynamic features like flush door handles and efficient 18-inch wheels from the concept, along with a more streamlined rear roofline compared to other Hyundai SUVs. To enhance its visual appeal, the Nexo employs a three-coat paint process that creates a multidimensional effect, shifting in appearance with changes in light and environment. Available in six distinct colours, the Nexo has grown in size compared to its predecessor, offering a more spacious and commanding presence on the road.
The interior of the next-gen Nexo is equipped with a suite of advanced technologies and sustainable materials to offer both comfort and connectivity. Borrowing the 12.3-inch dual display setup from the Hyundai Ioniq 5 EV, the dashboard showcases digital screens that serve as camera feeds, replacing traditional ORVMs.
Features such as a head-up display, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, over-the-air (OTA) updates, a 14-speaker Bang and Olufsen sound system, a wireless charger, and V2L (vehicle to load) capability enhance the user experience. To maximize cabin space, Hyundai has opted for slimmer seats, while also prioritizing sustainability with the use of bio-process leather, recycled PET fabric, and linen in the interior design.
Performance and Safety
Highlighting its performance enhancements, the new Hyundai Nexo is powered by a 204hp, 350Nm motor, marking a significant increase in horsepower from its predecessor, though experiencing a slight decrease in torque. The improvement in power has reduced the 0-100kph acceleration time to 7.8 seconds, down from 9.2 seconds, showcasing the vehicle's enhanced dynamics.
A notable feature of the new Nexo's powertrain is its larger 6.69kg hydrogen tank coupled with a 2.64kWh battery, enabling a remarkable driving range of over 700km, based on Hyundai's internal testing. This capability underscores Hyundai's efforts to push the boundaries of hydrogen fuel cell technology for longer, more sustainable journeys.
Safety is a priority for the Hyundai Nexo FCEV, with the SUV featuring a robust suite of safety technologies and structural enhancements to protect passengers and the hydrogen fuel tank. The vehicle includes up to nine airbags and employs hot stamping and high-strength materials to fortify body rigidity. A multi-skeleton structure further augments passenger safety, while Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) are integrated to prevent collisions. Hyundai's commitment to achieving top-tier safety ratings is evident, with the Nexo previously securing a 5-star Euro NCAP rating and a Top Safety Pick award from the IIHS.
Global Launch and Market Adoption
Hyundai has announced that the new Nexo will be introduced to global markets in 2025, though a specific timeline for its launch remains unspecified. Despite the limited infrastructure for hydrogen refueling, particularly in markets like India, Hyundai continues to explore the feasibility of fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEVs) through studies and demonstrations. The Nexo's previous showcases in India at the 2020 Auto Expo and the 2018 India-Korea Business Summit indicate Hyundai's interest in expanding the vehicle's reach, despite current challenges.
The second-generation Hyundai Nexo represents a significant leap forward in hydrogen fuel cell technology, blending enhanced performance, safety, and design innovations. With its extended range, advanced technological integrations, and commitment to sustainable materials, the Nexo sets a new benchmark for FCEVs, positioning Hyundai at the forefront of alternative fuel vehicle development. As the global automotive industry continues to evolve towards greener solutions, the Nexo's launch in 2025 will undoubtedly play a pivotal role in shaping the future of hydrogen-powered transportation.
