Hyundai Motor Introduces IONIQ 9 Seed Ball Drone Station To Enhance Forest Restoration Efforts
Hyundai Motor Company has developed the IONIQ 9 Seed Ball Drone Station, aiming to aid reforestation in areas damaged by wildfires. This new station, based on the IONIQ 9 electric SUV, is equipped with a drone platform and vehicle-to-load (V2L) technology for powering drone operations. It complements the IONIQ 5 Monitoring Drone Station, enhancing Hyundai's Smart Forest Restoration Program and global IONIQ Forest project.
The IONIQ 9 Seed Ball Drone Station is designed for efficient tree planting in hard-to-reach areas. The large drone disperses clay seed balls from the air, facilitating large-scale reforestation. This initiative will start in Uljin, a region on Korea’s East Coast affected by wildfires in 2022. The project aims to accelerate reforestation efforts across wildfire-affected regions.
The station features a built-in drone takeoff and landing platform integrated into the trunk, offering operational flexibility. Its V2L system allows autonomous power supply for drones directly from the vehicle. Designed for zero emissions and low noise, it minimizes environmental impact while accessing remote forest areas with its off-road capabilities.
In June last year, Hyundai signed a five-year partnership with the Korea National Arboreta and Gardens Institute and Tree Planet. This collaboration focuses on forest monitoring and data collection using the IONIQ 5 Monitoring Drone Station to restore wildfire-affected areas along Korea’s East Coast.
The IONIQ Forest project, launched in 2016 as part of Hyundai's CSR initiatives, involves customers and communities in forest-building activities. It addresses social and environmental challenges through themed projects across 13 countries, including the US, Brazil, Vietnam, India, and the Czech Republic. Hyundai plans to expand its drone stations globally within this framework.
The spacious rear cabin of the IONIQ 9 is equipped with a swivel seat, dual monitors, and a dedicated drone operation PC. This setup transforms the SUV into a mobile office for precise field operations. The collaboration with Guru E&T ensures advanced reforestation solutions are integrated into this innovative vehicle design.
