Hyundai Motor Introduces New XCIENT Fuel Cell Truck With Advanced Hydrogen Technology At ACT Expo 2025
Hyundai Motor Company has introduced its new XCIENT Fuel Cell Class-8 heavy-duty truck at the Advanced Clean Transportation (ACT) Expo 2025 in Anaheim, California. This unveiling underscores Hyundai's dedication to expanding its hydrogen business in North America. The event, running from April 28 to May 1, aims to solidify Hyundai's leadership in the global hydrogen energy transition and strengthen its presence in the North American commercial vehicle market.
The XCIENT Fuel Cell truck is equipped with a 180 kW hydrogen fuel cell system, featuring two 90 kW stacks for reliable energy production. It includes a 72 kWh battery pack and a 350 kW e-motor, delivering maximum torque of 2,237 Nm. The truck can travel up to 450 miles under optimal conditions and has ten hydrogen tanks with a combined capacity of approximately 68 kg. Designed for heavy-duty applications, it supports a gross combination weight of up to 82,000 lbs.
At the ACT Expo, Hyundai highlighted its achievements in hydrogen-powered logistics through strategic partnerships in North America. The NorCAL ZERO Project operates 30 XCIENT Fuel Cell trucks at the Ports of Oakland and Richmond, marking the largest single deployment of hydrogen trucks in North America. These trucks have covered nearly 450,000 miles since September 2023, transporting freight without tailpipe emissions.
Hyundai's partnership with GLOVIS America under the HTWO Logistics initiative focuses on decarbonizing logistics at Hyundai Motor Group Metaplant America (HMGMA). Since October 2024, this initiative has involved producing and consuming hydrogen on-site. Currently, 21 XCIENT fuel cell trucks manage almost half of HMGMA's delivery logistics. This project demonstrates a comprehensive hydrogen ecosystem from production to vehicle operations.
The new XCIENT model features an upgraded hydrogen fuel cell system tailored for North America. Since its initial concept reveal at ACT Expo 2024, it has undergone rigorous testing across various climates and use cases. Collaborations with fleet operators have ensured that it meets diverse customer needs, including port transportation and medium-distance logistics.
The interior of the XCIENT Fuel Cell truck has been enhanced for driver comfort and convenience. It includes a fully digital instrument cluster and a touchscreen infotainment system with physical buttons integrated into the center console. Additionally, it is equipped with Advanced Driver-Assistance Systems (ADAS) such as Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist (FCA), Lane Departure Warning (LDW), Smart Cruise Control (SCC), Blind-Spot Collision Warning (BCW), and more.
Commitment to Clean Transportation
Ken Ramirez, Executive Vice President at Hyundai Motor Company, emphasized their commitment to clean logistics solutions during Hyundai’s ACT Expo press conference. "At Hyundai Motor, we are redefining the future of clean logistics with innovative solutions that prioritize safety, efficiency and sustainability," said Ramirez. He highlighted Hyundai's capabilities across the hydrogen value chain to build a sustainable ecosystem.
The company also announced plans for 'HTWO Energy Savannah', a Class-8 heavy-duty truck hydrogen refueling station near HMGMA in Savannah, Georgia. Developed with HydroFleet and Capital Development Partners, this station will begin operations by late 2025.
XCIENT Fuel Cell Truck Display
The XCIENT Fuel Cell truck is displayed at Hyundai's booth during ACT Expo from April 29 to May 1 alongside its hydrogen fuel cell system exhibits. Attendees can explore Hyundai’s U.S. business plans while experiencing firsthand test drives of the fuel cell truck’s technology upgrades.
Since its launch in Switzerland in 2020, the XCIENT Fuel Cell has been deployed in 13 countries covering over 13 million kilometers cumulatively. This reflects Hyundai’s commitment to zero-emission transportation supported by public-private partnerships globally.
Established in 1967, Hyundai Motor Company operates in over 200 countries with more than 120,000 employees tackling mobility challenges worldwide.
