Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Alabama Marks Two Decades Of Vehicle Production And Community Impact
Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Alabama (HMMA) marked its 20th anniversary with a Team Member Appreciation Day on May 3, 2025. The event, held at the HMMA campus, was attended by team members, their families, and community guests. Activities included plant tours, games, musical performances, and a fireworks display. The highlight was a live performance by Jermaine Dupri and Friends. Free food and drinks were available for everyone.
Since its inception in 2005, HMMA has produced over 6.27 million vehicles. The plant initially started with the Hyundai Sonata and now manufactures models like the Hyundai Santa Fe, Tucson, Santa Cruz, and Genesis GV70. The facility is expected to produce around 358,000 vehicles in 2025 alone. This growth reflects Hyundai's significant investment of over $3 billion in technology and expansion.
The establishment of HMMA has had a substantial economic impact on Alabama. Ellen McNair, Alabama's Secretary of Commerce, highlighted this during the anniversary celebration. She noted that Hyundai's presence has generated an annual economic impact exceeding $5 billion for the state. Additionally, it has created thousands of well-paying jobs for local residents.
Hyundai's operations have expanded employment significantly since the plant opened. Initially employing about 2,000 people, HMMA now provides jobs for approximately 4,200 individuals. Including suppliers and related industries, Hyundai has contributed to creating over 40,000 jobs in Alabama.
In recognition of its milestone anniversary, Genesis Gives donated $50,000 to Alabama State University during the celebration event. Additionally, the Genesis Inspiration Foundation awarded a $50,000 grant to the Alabama Shakespeare Festival to support arts education initiatives. These contributions underscore Hyundai's commitment to community engagement and support for educational programs.
Chris Susock, President and CEO of HMMA, expressed pride in the team's achievements over two decades. "Our 20th anniversary marks a notable milestone worthy of celebration by all of our team members and their families," he stated. He emphasized that while technology and processes have evolved since 2005 when the first Sonata was produced, the strength of the team remains unchanged.
Future Prospects
The Montgomery plant is set to officially commemorate its 20th year on May 20, 2025. Looking ahead, HMMA plans to continue its production of diverse vehicle models for North America. This includes sedans like the Sonata as well as SUVs and electric vehicles such as the Electrified GV70.
HMMA operates independently under Hyundai Motor Company based in Seoul but plays a crucial role in distributing vehicles across North America through more than 830 dealerships managed by Hyundai Motor America.
The ongoing success of HMMA highlights its importance not only as a manufacturing hub but also as an integral part of Alabama’s economy and community fabric.
