Hyundai Motor Group Marks Two Decades Of Innovation At California Proving Ground Facility

Hyundai America Technical Center, Inc. (HATCI) recently marked two decades of successful vehicle testing at its California Proving Ground (CPG) in California City. Since its inception in 2005, the $80 million facility has tested over 5,000 vehicles from Hyundai Motor, Kia, and Genesis. These vehicles have been driven more than 20 million miles under various conditions to ensure their quality and safety.

Euisun Chung, Executive Chair of Hyundai Motor Group, highlighted the importance of the CPG in advancing the company's technological pursuits. "The Hyundai Motor Group has made exceptional progress over the past 20 years, thanks in part to our California Proving Ground and the outstanding work of our team there," he stated. The focus remains on pioneering technologies like AI, robotics, electrification, and hydrogen technology.

Located in the Mojave Desert, the CPG spans 4,500 acres and serves as a hub for vehicle evaluation operations in North America. It features a 6.4-mile oval track, a Vehicle Dynamics Area (VDA), a winding road track, hill roads, off-road loops, and specially surfaced roads mimicking U.S. highways. These facilities enable comprehensive vehicle evaluation and development testing.

Comprehensive Testing Capabilities

The CPG's team conducts full vehicle evaluations focusing on durability and development. Tests include ride and handling assessments, noise and vibration checks, and heat protection evaluations. The site also boasts three fully equipped garages and a material-weathering facility for UV degradation studies.

Supporting North American Operations

HATCI is integral to Hyundai Motor Group's design and engineering efforts in North America. It supports new model development through dedicated engineering facilities across the United States. These include HATCI HQ in Michigan, Chino Lab for powertrain performance tuning in California, and other specialized centers focused on design and quality.

Hyundai Motor Group employs over 570,000 people in the U.S., having invested more than $20.5 billion since 2002. Established in Ann Arbor in 1986, HATCI is a key R&D center for Hyundai's North American operations. As Hyundai ranks third globally in sales volume, HATCI continues to expand its engineering capabilities to meet customer needs.

Hyundai Motor Group operates globally with about 250,000 employees across various sectors including mobility brands like Hyundai, Kia, and Genesis. The group aims to create a better future through innovation and collaboration while maintaining strong communication channels worldwide.
