Hyundai IONIQ 5 Successfully Completes Epic EV Road Trip To The Arctic Ocean
Patrick Nadeau, an owner of the Hyundai IONIQ 5, has completed a remarkable electric vehicle journey from Markham, Ontario, to Tuktoyaktuk in the Northwest Territories. Covering 19,743 km, his IONIQ 5 averaged an energy consumption of 18.9 kWh/100 km. The trip involved 87 charging stops, each lasting about 42 minutes, costing a total of $1,403.13.
During this adventure, Patrick Nadeau captured virtual reality content to be shared with hospitals for paediatric cancer patients through Hyundai Hope on Wheels. This initiative aims to bring the beauty of Western Canada to young patients who cannot travel. The journey began on April 24th and concluded back at Hyundai Canada's headquarters on July 2nd.
Nadeau's expedition took him through five provinces and two territories, demonstrating that long-distance travel with an electric vehicle is both feasible and sustainable in Canada. Despite facing challenges like unpredictable road conditions and limited charging infrastructure in remote areas, the IONIQ 5 performed admirably.
The vehicle's range of up to 504 kilometres allowed it to tackle stretches of nearly 400 kilometres without any charging facilities. "Travelling this far with any vehicle is adventure! The most challenging portions of this trip for me were two stretches of nearly 400 kilometres with nothing in sight," said Patrick Nadeau.
One significant challenge was being delayed in Dawson City due to high water levels preventing ferry access. Additionally, wildfires temporarily closed part of the Alaska Highway after reaching the Arctic Ocean. Despite these setbacks, Nadeau managed to cover over 1,000 kilometres per day on his return journey.
The IONIQ 5 was loaded with approximately 400 pounds of gear including filming equipment and camping supplies. Remarkably, Nadeau completed the entire trip without encountering a single puncture. His experiences were shared weekly on Hyundai Canada's social media platforms.
Hyundai's Commitment to Electrification
Steve Flamand, president and CEO of Hyundai Auto Canada, expressed pride in their EV lineup: "Hyundai is fully committed to an all-electric future." He highlighted their recent ranking as Canada's top brand for EV consideration by J.D. Power as evidence of this commitment.
The IONIQ 5 has received numerous accolades since its launch including World Car of the Year and World Electric Car of the Year in 2022. For 2025, enhancements include an available 84 kWh battery offering a range up to 504 kilometres.
Virtual Reality Initiative
Nadeau's journey also focused on creating immersive virtual reality experiences for children battling cancer through Hyundai Hope on Wheels. These VR experiences will allow young patients to explore Western Canada from their hospital rooms.
"Reaching Tuktoyaktuk in an IONIQ 5 is an incredible feeling," said Patrick Nadeau. "This trip wasn't just about the kilometres; it was about proving what's possible with an EV and creating a unique experience for children."
The adventure could have been completed faster but was intentionally extended so that Mr. Nadeau could visit beautiful locations across Canada while capturing content for Hyundai Hope on Wheels.
A Journey Worth Sharing
A long-form documentary detailing Patrick Nadeau's journey will be produced and shared on Hyundai Canada's YouTube channel. This project underscores Hyundai's dedication to educating customers about electric vehicles through various initiatives.
After reaching his destination at the Arctic Ocean in a stock IONIQ 5 model from 2025, Patrick returned to Markham having proven that electric vehicles can handle Canada's tough conditions effectively.
