Hyundai Hope On Wheels Contributes $250,000 To Charles-Bruneau Foundation For Art Therapy Program

Hyundai Canada, through its charitable foundation Hyundai Hope on Wheels, has donated $250,000 to the Charles-Bruneau Foundation. This contribution supports the paediatric hematology oncology unit at CHU de Québec–Université Laval. The funds will enhance the art therapy program, which aids children and families in managing the emotional challenges of cancer treatment.

The Charles-Bruneau Foundation aims to improve recovery chances for children with cancer by funding research and projects in paediatric hemato-oncology. It has established specialized units within four Quebec university hospitals, including CHU de Québec–Université Laval. These centres focus on providing comprehensive care to young patients.

The donation is part of Hyundai Hope on Wheels' $4 million commitment to Canadian paediatric oncology centres in 2025. This initiative seeks to advance treatment options and address survivorship needs for young cancer patients across the country. The art therapy program funded by this donation offers a creative outlet for children undergoing treatment.

The Charles-Bruneau Unit at CHU de Québec is known for its patient-centred care, serving over 800 children annually from Quebec City and eastern Quebec. The unit's multidisciplinary team is recognized for developing personalized treatment plans that aim to reduce long-term side effects and improve survivors' quality of life.

Marie-Eve Laflamme, an art therapist at the unit, highlighted how art therapy helps children express emotions and regain normalcy despite their illness. "Providing effective treatments is essential, but it is not enough," said Dr. Bruno Michon, head of the Charles-Bruneau Unit. "Art therapy allows us to humanize care, giving a voice back to the child at the heart of the healing process."

The donation event featured a Handprint Ceremony, a tradition of Hyundai Hope on Wheels. Patients and families placed handprints on a white Hyundai vehicle as a tribute to their resilience. This ceremony symbolized the shared commitment of healthcare staff, community members, and Hyundai representatives to support children with cancer.

Hyundai's Commitment

"This year marks the beginning of Hyundai Hope on Wheels in Canada," said Steve Flamand, president and CEO of Hyundai Canada. "By supporting programs like art therapy, we hope to bring comfort and joy to children during challenging times." The organization aims to fund research and care programs for young cancer patients through grants and donations.

The Charles-Bruneau Foundation has distributed nearly $100 million since 1990 to support pediatric cancer research and care in Quebec's university hospitals. It remains a leading funder in this field within the province. Meanwhile, Hyundai Hope On Wheels was first launched in the U.S. in 1998 and has become one of the largest non-profit funders of paediatric cancer research there.

This national initiative reflects Hyundai Canada's mission to invest in community health and well-being while creating brighter futures for children through meaningful contributions like this donation.
