Made-in-India Hyundai Grand i10 Gets 0 Star Safety Rating In Global NCAP Test For Africa
Hyundai's made-in-India Grand i10 has received a zero-star rating for adult occupant protection in the latest #SaferCarsForAfrica crash tests conducted by Global NCAP. The Hyundai Grand i10 hatchback achieved three stars for child occupant protection, but its structural performance raised significant concerns during the evaluation.
The GNCAP crash test recorded weak protection for the driver's chest in the frontal impact, alongside a high probability of severe injury in the side-impact test. Global NCAP classified the bodyshell and footwell area as unstable, indicating both were unable to withstand further load during the assessment.

The tested model was equipped with only frontal airbags for the driver and front passenger. It lacked side-body airbags, head-protection airbags and electronic stability control, offering only a driver seatbelt reminder as part of its standard safety equipment.
Global NCAP CEO Richard Woods criticised the disparity in safety standards for different markets, stating, "It is unacceptable to see the continued double standard on safety in low and middle income countries. Democratising vehicle safety in Africa is a Global NCAP priority, and consumers deserve safer vehicles regardless of where in the world they live."

Bobby Ramagwede, Chief Executive Officer of the Automobile Association of South Africa, also expressed concern over the result stating, "These results are deeply concerning and highlight a continuing pattern in which vehicles sold in Africa do not meet the same safety standards applied in other regions. South African motorists deserve better. The Hyundai Grand i10's zero-star rating reinforces the urgent need for manufacturers to commit to equal safety for all markets.
This result underlines why Africa urgently needs stronger regulatory standards and greater manufacturer accountability. The AA believes no vehicle should be sold here without side protection systems and Electronic Stability Control as standard. Safety should never be optional, and certainly not reserved for markets outside Africa."
The made-in-India Hyundai Grand i10's zero-star rating from Global NCAP places attention on the broader issue of structural integrity and occupant protection in budget-segment cars sold across developing regions. The findings reinforce how varied safety norms continue to expose buyers to preventable risks during collisions, especially in models without modern restraint and stability systems.
