Hyundai's 2025 IONIQ 5, IONIQ 6, Kona, Tucson And Santa Fe Earn TOP SAFETY PICK+ Awards From IIHS

Hyundai has achieved a significant milestone with five of its vehicles receiving the TOP SAFETY PICK+ designation from the Insurance Institute of Highway Safety (IIHS). The 2025 models of IONIQ 5, IONIQ 6, Kona, Tucson, and Santa Fe have all been awarded this top safety rating. These awards highlight the safest vehicle options within their categories according to IIHS standards.

The updated criteria for the 2025 IIHS awards now include stricter requirements for second-row occupant safety. Vehicles must achieve an acceptable rating in these tests to qualify for the TOP SAFETY PICK, while a good rating is necessary for the TOP SAFETY PICK+. This change underscores the importance of back seat safety in modern vehicles.

Hyundai's commitment to passenger safety is evident through its advanced technology features. Cole Stutz, chief safety officer at Hyundai Motor North America, stated, "Hyundai recognizes the importance in keeping all passengers safe with technology advancements throughout the vehicle." The company has integrated SmartSense advanced safety features and connectivity options to enhance overall vehicle safety.

In addition to these technologies, Hyundai has incorporated advanced seat belt systems and other innovations like rear occupant alerts and extra side airbags for back seat passengers. These enhancements are part of Hyundai's strategy to ensure comprehensive protection for all occupants.

The IIHS has introduced new testing protocols that include a second dummy positioned behind the driver in moderate overlap front tests. This adjustment replaces the previous test format entirely. "We’re once again challenging automakers to make their new models even safer than those they were building a year ago," said IIHS President David Harkey.

To secure a TSP/TSP+ award, vehicles must also perform well in small overlap front and updated side tests. Additionally, they need an acceptable or good rating in pedestrian front crash prevention evaluations conducted during both day and night conditions. All trims must feature headlights rated as acceptable or good.
