Hyundai's Evaluating Genesis Luxury Marque For India Launch

Hyundai's ambitious plans to bring its luxury brand Genesis to Indian shores have become a topic of keen interest. Since the brand was intorduced to us at Auto Expo 2016, there's been much speculation about when the Genesis sub-brand would make its debut in the country.

Hyundai India's COO Tarun Garg confirmed in the marque's annual report for FY2024-25 that the firm was evaluating the Genesis brand for an Indian launch. Genesis is a sub-brand in Hyundai's lineup and features the automotive group's most high end cars.

Hyundai Considers Launch of Genesis in India

Garg stated, "We are also strategically evaluating the introduction of Genesis, Hyundai's global luxury marque, to redefine luxury through innovation, design and differentiated experiences. This aligns with our aspiration to serve the evolving expectations of discerning Indian consumers."

Genesis was established as Hyundai's luxury division in the mid-2010s, has evolved from offering luxury sedans to a broader portfolio that now includes high-end SUVs. Initially introduced with sedans that aimed to compete against established luxury brands, Genesis has significantly expanded its range over the years.

Currently, it offers a variety of models, including the G70, G80, and G90 sedans. The brand has also offers SUVs like the GV70, GV80, and the all-electric GV60. Notably, the GV80 coupe-SUV has already been trademarked in India and coulld be the brand's first offering in the country if Hyundai lets it into the sub-continent.

The manufacturing of Genesis vehicles predominantly takes place in South Korea, with the exception of the electric GV70 SUV, which is produced in Hyundai's Alabama plant in the United States. Hyundai could potentially import Genesis models as completely-built up (CBU) units to India or explore local assembly options to undercut its German rivals.

Despite the absence of a specific timeline for Genesis' launch in India, Hyundai Motor India Limited (HMIL)'s official announcement has sparked expectations of the brand's entry into the Indian luxury car market in the near future. The increasing demand for luxury vehicles in India sets a promising backdrop for Genesis, providing an opportunity for Hyundai to tap into this growing segment with its range of luxury cars and SUVs.

DriveSpark Thinks

Hyundai's decision to evaluate the introduction of its luxury brand Genesis in India reflects the company's ambition to serve the high-end segment of the Indian automobile market. With a rich portfolio of luxury sedans and SUVs, Genesis is poised to offer a fresh option to Indian consumers looking for luxury, innovation, and striking design.
