Hyundai Celebrates Victory At Pikes Peak And Secures Podium Finishes At Watkins Glen International
Hyundai had a remarkable weekend at two major U.S. motorsport events, achieving significant victories. At the 103rd Broadmoor Pikes Peak International Hill Climb, Evasive Motorsports and driver Robert Walker secured first place in the Exhibition division with the all-electric Hyundai IONIQ 5 N. Meanwhile, at Watkins Glen International, Hyundai teams excelled in the IMSA Michelin Pilot Challenge, earning double podium finishes.
In a challenging race at Pikes Peak, extreme weather conditions led to delays and a shortened course. Despite these hurdles, Evasive Motorsports triumphed with a time of 4:23.858. This victory highlighted both the vehicle's capabilities and the team's resilience under difficult circumstances.
At Watkins Glen International, Eric Powell and Tyler Gonzalez drove the No. 99 Hyundai Elantra N TCR to second place for Victor Gonzalez Racing Team. Parker Chase and Harry Gottsacker finished third in the No. 98 Hyundai Elantra N TCR for Bryan Herta Autosport, completing a strong performance for Hyundai.
The race began with Hyundai cars prominently positioned near the front. The No. 98 started fourth while the No. 99 began in fifth position. Early on, strategic moves saw the No. 99 advance quickly to fourth place before a full-course yellow regrouped the field.
This weekend featured temporary driver changes within Hyundai's lineup due to other commitments at Nürburgring 24 Hours in Germany. Taylor Hagler joined Mark Wilkins in the No. 33 entry, while Parker Chase partnered with Harry Gottsacker in the No. 98 car.
Mid-race strategies played a crucial role as pit stops during another full-course yellow allowed Hyundai teams to gain positions. The No. 99 emerged second after these stops, setting up their podium finish.
Pikes Peak Challenges
The Pikes Peak event faced severe weather challenges with winds delaying proceedings by over two hours and forcing officials to shorten the course significantly due to unsafe conditions near its summit.
Despite these obstacles, Evasive Motorsports showcased adaptability by delivering an impressive run that secured them victory amidst unpredictable elements on this iconic mountain climb.
