Hyundai Canada Contributes $250,000 To CHEO For Enhanced Paediatric Cancer Care And Research

Hyundai Canada, through its charitable arm Hyundai Hope on Wheels, has donated $250,000 to the CHEO Foundation. This contribution aims to support efforts against childhood cancers. CHEO, a leading paediatric health centre in Ottawa, serves children from eastern and northern Ontario, western Quebec, and Nunavut. The donation was part of an event attended by Hyundai representatives and CHEO oncology patient ambassadors.

The Handprint Ceremony is a notable event by Hyundai Hope on Wheels. It invites children affected by cancer, along with donors and supporters, to leave painted handprints on a Hyundai vehicle. These handprints symbolise hope and resilience in the fight against childhood cancer.

Hyundai Hope on Wheels is dedicated to funding research and care programs for young cancer patients. In 2025 alone, it committed over $4 million to paediatric oncology centres across Canada. This initiative marks the beginning of an annual commitment to supporting childhood cancer research.

Steve Read, president and CEO of the CHEO Foundation, expressed gratitude for the donation. "We are incredibly grateful to Hyundai Hope on Wheels for this generous gift. Their support is a powerful investment in the future of paediatric cancer care," he said.

CHEO's Hematology and Oncology Program offers comprehensive care for children with blood and cancer disorders. Last year, 110 children were diagnosed with cancer at CHEO, with 500 others receiving active care. The institution is part of the Children’s Oncology Group, focusing on understanding cancer causes and developing better treatments.

The CHEO Research Institute (RI) leads in paediatric cancer research. It participates in over 30 multi-centre studies aimed at innovative treatments like safer diagnostics and new approaches for brain cancer.

Innovative Research at CHEO

In its labs, senior scientists at CHEO RI are pioneering work such as oral immunotherapy for neuroblastoma and targeted therapies using anti-Inhibitor of Apoptosis drugs. They also explore personalised cancer treatments using a pre-clinical transplantation platform.

Kirk Merrett from Hyundai Canada highlighted the significance of community support during these events. "As we continue our first year of Hyundai Hope on Wheels in Canada, it’s incredibly moving to see how each Handprint Ceremony brings communities together in support of children and families affected by cancer," he stated.
