Honda's #93 MMG Civic Type R TCR Achieves Third Place Finish At Mid-Ohio Race
The fourth round of the IMSA Michelin Pilot Challenge season saw Honda's return to the podium. The #93 MMG Honda Civic Type R TCR, driven by Karl Wittmer, LP Montour, and Dai Yoshihara, secured third place in the O'Reilly Auto Parts 4 Hours of Mid-Ohio. Wittmer started strong from pole position, having set a new TCR lap record at Mid-Ohio.
Challenges arose for other Honda entries during the race. The #5 KMW Motorsports with TMR Engineering Honda and the #89 HART faced difficulties. Contact on track and mechanical problems led to their early exits, resulting in twelfth and fifteenth place finishes respectively.
Wittmer had a promising start but faced intense competition for first place in the initial laps. Traffic from the GS class added to the chaos, forcing him to take evasive action that sent him off track briefly. Despite this setback, he quickly rejoined the race but lost some positions.
The team adapted their strategy after this incident. They used full course cautions effectively to regain ground. As Dai Yoshihara and LP Montour took over driving duties, they gradually climbed back up the order through an alternative pit stop sequence.
Dai Yoshihara expressed satisfaction with their performance: "The race was great, we got third place! My stint was pretty strong, it was a little hard because I had a bit of contact here and there, but the car was still great. I'm super happy about it."
He also noted that this was his last scheduled race in the IMSA Michelin Pilot Challenge for now. He hoped that his teammates would continue to perform well throughout the remainder of the season.
Upcoming Challenges
Honda is set to compete again in the fifth round of the IMSA Michelin Pilot Challenge season. The two-hour LP Building Solutions 120 will take place at Watkins Glen International on Saturday, June 21st at 11:45 AM ET.
The #93 team's comeback drive concluded with Wittmer taking over for the final stint. He crossed the finish line in third place, marking a successful recovery for MMG Honda after earlier challenges during the race.
