Honda Reaches Milestone Of 500 Million Units In Global Motorcycle Production
Honda has reached a significant milestone in its motorcycle production journey, achieving 500 million units globally. This achievement comes 76 years after the company began mass-producing motorcycles with the Dream D-Type model in 1949. The celebration took place at Honda Motorcycle and Scooter India Private Limited's facility in Ahmedabad District, India.
Honda's journey began in 1948, driven by a mission to create technology that simplifies life. The company has expanded its reach by offering products tailored to diverse customer needs worldwide. In 1959, American Honda Motor Co., Inc., became Honda's first overseas subsidiary, marking the start of its global expansion.
The company's international production started in Belgium in 1963, following a principle of local manufacturing where demand exists. By 1979, Honda had begun producing motorcycles in North America at its Marysville, Ohio plant. Here, the CR250M Elsinore dirt bike was the first model produced on September 10, 1979.
Over the years, Honda has achieved several production milestones: reaching 100 million units in 1997, 200 million in 2008, and 300 million by 2014. In 2018, annual production surpassed 20 million units for the first time. Despite a temporary decline due to COVID-19 in 2020, demand has since rebounded to pre-pandemic levels.
Honda offers a wide range of models from everyday commuters to larger leisure bikes and electric vehicles in select markets. With an annual capacity exceeding 20 million units across 23 countries and regions, Honda continues to innovate with new electric-powered two-wheelers set for global expansion starting in 2024.
The company remains committed to enhancing its motorcycle business through diverse product offerings and efficient operations while aiming for carbon neutrality through electrification. "For Honda, motorcycle business is our founder's business," said Toshihiro Mibe, President of Honda Motor Co., Ltd.
Historical Timeline of Production
The timeline of Honda's production highlights key moments: starting with the Dream D-Type release in 1949 and the Super Cub C100 debuting in 1958. By the late '60s and '70s, production expanded into countries like Pakistan, Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, and Brazil.

Currently, side-by-side and ATV production occurs at plants in South Carolina and North Carolina using both domestic and global parts.
Commitment to Innovation
Honda's commitment to innovation is evident through its pioneering engine designs that have set industry standards for over six decades. The company plans to introduce battery-electric powersports products as part of its ongoing efforts to enhance mobility solutions globally.
"We have built trust with our customers through many products," Mibe added. "I would like to thank our customers and all stakeholders involved." This dedication underscores Honda's mission to expand customer joy worldwide while maintaining a core focus on motorcycles as central to its identity.
Honda continues delivering products via more than 30,000 dealers worldwide. As it moves forward with electrification plans alongside traditional internal combustion engine models (ICE), Honda aims at solidifying its position within the industry by providing attractive offerings that meet evolving consumer needs globally.
