Honda Battle Of The Bands Celebrates HBCUs With First-Ever West Coast Showcase At SoFi Stadium
The Honda Battle of the Bands (HBOB) made its debut on the West Coast at SoFi Stadium, attracting a large crowd to celebrate Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). The event featured six HBCU marching bands, marking its 19th year. Nick Cannon hosted, with a special performance by GRAMMY-nominated artist GloRilla. Each participating school received a $50,000 grant from Honda for music education and career development.
Jasmine Cockfield from American Honda Motor Co., Inc. expressed pride in showcasing HBCU talent on the West Coast for the first time. "Honda is proud to celebrate these exceptional students and institutions," she stated, emphasizing their commitment to supporting HBCUs. The theme "Driving the Legacy of HBCUs" highlighted their significant role in advancing education within the Black community.
The showcase included performances by Alabama A&M University, Alabama State University, Hampton University, North Carolina A&T State University, Southern University, and the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff. GloRilla's energetic performance concluded the event, leaving the audience thrilled. This initiative continues Honda's over 35-year support for HBCUs.
Honda reaffirmed its dedication to HBCU music education with a $500,000 grant to the Thurgood Marshall College Fund. This grant aims to provide scholarships for student-musicians nationwide. Additionally, Honda collaborated with the Black College Expo™ to host a college and career fair at SoFi Stadium before the showcase. Over 200 colleges participated, offering interviews and scholarships exceeding $10 million.
In April, Honda will host the Honda Campus All-Star Challenge (HCASC), an academic competition for HBCU students. Jasmine Cockfield highlighted Honda's long-standing support through initiatives like HCASC and scholarship programs with organizations such as the National Urban League.
Longstanding Commitment to HBCUs
For more than three decades, Honda has impacted over 300,000 students through programs like HBOB and HCASC. These efforts have provided over $14 million in grants for educational programs and facility improvements at HBCUs. Through partnerships with organizations like Thurgood Marshall College Fund and UNCF chapters, Honda offers scholarships and development opportunities to students.
Honda's involvement extends to being part of the HBCU Partnership Challenge by the Congressional Bipartisan HBCU Caucus. This initiative fosters strategic partnerships between government, industry, and HBCUs for sustainable collaboration. Learn more about these efforts on Honda's diversity reports page.
The HBOB event was not only a celebration but also a testament to Honda's ongoing commitment to empowering HBCU students through education and career opportunities.
