Honda Associates In Alabama Celebrate Production Start Of All-New 2026 Passport And Passport TrailSport
Over 4,500 workers at the Honda Alabama Auto Plant (AAP) celebrated the production of the new 2026 Honda Passport and Passport TrailSport. These models are the most off-road capable Honda SUVs to date. Built exclusively in Lincoln, Alabama, these vehicles feature a 3.5-liter DOHC V-6 engine and a 10-speed automatic transmission, both enhancing their rugged capabilities.
The Passport TrailSport stands out as Honda's ultimate adventure SUV. It includes features like steel skid plates, heavy-duty recovery hooks, and all-terrain tires. The vehicle is designed for both off-road versatility and excellent on-road performance. Lamar Whitaker, plant leader at AAP, praised the team's ingenuity in bringing this rugged SUV to market.
The AAP team collaborated closely with Honda's R&D department in Ohio. This partnership led to design refinements and new processes that improved quality and efficiency. For the first time, members of the Alabama New Model Team were based at the North American Automotive Development Center (ADC) in Ohio during development.
Honda's "One Floor" approach facilitated collaboration between R&D, manufacturing, and purchasing teams from early stages of product creation. This teamwork resulted in a high-quality Passport that's easier to build. Mike Smith, senior staff engineer at AAP, highlighted this deep collaboration as key to creating a high-quality vehicle.
AAP introduced several advanced manufacturing techniques for the new Passport models. One innovation is a tool for installing flush mount parking sensors using ultra-sonic welders. This tool enhances flexibility by working on multiple models without needing separate equipment.
The Passport also adopts a front-end module (FEM) assembly approach for the first time. This method allows workers to step into the vehicle's front to install components inside the engine room. It improves ergonomics by reducing production processes while maintaining high build quality.
Enhanced Safety Features
The Passport TrailSport models include heavy-duty front and rear recovery points rated at twice their Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR). These cast-iron recovery points are powder-coated to resist corrosion and engineered to break away during collisions. This patented design aims for top safety ratings.
Additionally, a trailer hitch is standard on both TrailSport models, allowing them to tow up to 5,000 pounds. The hitch integrates rear recovery points for added protection against off-road damage.
Ergonomic Improvements
AAP made ergonomic improvements by adding lift assist devices throughout production processes. These devices help handle heavier components like the steel hood and second-row seat structure more efficiently. The second-row seat includes a steel-reinforced support structure contributing to crash protection.
The matte finish of exterior garnishes prevents scratches when customers lean equipment against the vehicle. Late-stage adjustments ensured these garnishes meet quality standards by preventing scratches.
Engine Specifications
The AAP engine plant produces the 3.5-liter V-6 engine powering the Passport with 285 horsepower and 262 lb.-ft of torque. The new 10-speed automatic transmission is manufactured at Honda's Georgia plant.
