Honda And Acura Dealerships Lead Industry With EPA ENERGY STAR Certification For Energy Efficiency
Honda and Acura have achieved a significant milestone with the most ENERGY STAR certified vehicle dealerships among automakers. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has recognised seven more dealerships for their energy efficiency, bringing the total to 14 since 2024. These certifications highlight Honda and Acura's commitment to reducing environmental impact through their Environmental Leadership Programs.
The Honda and Acura Environmental Leadership Programs, initiated in 2011, aim to support dealers in reducing their environmental footprint. Known as the "Green Dealer" Program, it assists automobile, powersports, and power equipment dealers in cutting down CO2 emissions. Over 600 dealers have collectively reduced emissions by more than 275,000 metric tons, equivalent to the annual electricity use of over 53,000 homes.
These programs provide guidance on energy performance, water efficiency, and site practices. Dealers receive expert advice on data collection and implementation to optimise facilities. Since its inception, the average dealership has cut energy use by 20%, saving approximately $20,000 annually.
To earn ENERGY STAR certification, dealerships must meet stringent energy performance standards. Using the EPA's online ENERGY STAR Portfolio Manager® tool, they assess their energy usage based on a year's utility bills. Dealerships are then evaluated with a 1–100 ENERGY STAR score. A score of 75 or higher indicates superior energy efficiency compared to similar-sized dealerships nationwide.
The newly certified dealerships include First Texas Honda in Austin, Hardin Honda in Anaheim, Honda of Serramonte in Colma, Klein Honda in Everett, Rallye Acura in Roslyn, Space Coast Honda in Cocoa, and Tony Honda in Waipahu.
Dealers' Commitment to Sustainability
Klein Honda Vice President Rory Klein expressed pride in achieving ENERGY STAR certification: "We are truly honored to earn ENERGY STAR certification. Achieving this certification is not only a milestone for our dealership but also a reflection of our commitment to environmental stewardship."
Rallye Motor Company General Manager & CFO Stefanie Horn stated: "Rallye Acura is proud to have achieved ENERGY STAR certification. This award is dedicated to the entire Rallye Acura team who worked hard to make it possible."
Honda's Broader Environmental Goals
Honda aims for zero environmental impact by 2050 through its "Triple Action to Zero" strategy. This includes achieving carbon neutrality for all products and corporate activities and using 100% sustainable materials by reprocessing products back into raw materials.
The company plans for battery-electric and fuel cell-electric vehicles to account for all auto sales globally by 2040. Additionally, they are working towards electrifying powersports and power equipment product lines.
In North America, Honda offsets CO2 emissions from manufacturing operations through long-term virtual power purchase agreements (VPPAs) for wind and solar power covering over 80% of electricity use.
"With support from the Honda and Acura Environmental Leadership Programs," said Jessika Laudermilk of American Honda Motor Co., Inc., "our dealer partners continue to lead the industry in environmentally responsible dealership operations."
Space Coast Honda Service Director John DeMasso added: "It is a great honor to receive ENERGY STAR certification at Space Coast Honda." The dealership focuses on energy-efficient upgrades like LED lighting and smart thermostat controls.
The efforts of these dealerships align with Honda's broader environmental goals while setting an industry standard for sustainability practices within automotive retail operations.
