Hatchback Sales Decline In August 2025: Maruti WagonR Continues To Lead

India's hatchback segment witnessed a notable year-on-year (YoY) slowdown in August 2025, with total sales at 73,463 units, down 11.63% from 83,129 units in August 2024 - a volume drop of 9,666 units. The segment's decline reflects cooling demand across most key models, although a few standout performers still recorded growth. Industry analysts suggest that the upcoming GST 2.0 reforms could bring relief in the coming months by making small cars more affordable.

Maruti WagonR Leads Despite Dip

The Maruti Suzuki WagonR maintained its lead with 14,522 units, though it marked an 11.72% decline from 16,450 units a year ago. The tallboy hatchback commanded a 19.77% market share within the segment and recorded a mild month-on-month (MoM) dip from 14,710 units in July 2025.

Tata Motors had a positive month in this space. The Tata Tiago (and Tiago EV) clocked 5,250 units, marking a 10.92% growth from 4,733 units in August 2024.

Hyundai i10 & i20 Struggle

Hyundai faced a challenging month, as both its popular hatchbacks saw double-digit declines. The Grand i10 NIOS sales fell 27.16% to 3,908 units (from 5,365 units), whereas i20 volumes dropped 26.03% to 3,634 units (from 4,913 units).

Maruti Ignis, Celerio, S-Presso Sales Decline

Maruti's smaller hatchbacks also struggled: In fact, Ignis sales went down by 14.89% to 2,097 units (from 2,464 units) and Celerio sales dipped by 52.69% to 1,505 units (from 3,181 units). Furthermore, S-Presso sales also took a hit by 36.58% to 1,333 units (from 2,102 units).

Electric Hatchbacks

The MG Comet EV posted a minor 1.18% YoY rise, with 1,113 units sold versus 1,100 units last year - showing consistent demand in the micro EV niche. However, other small EVs like the Citroen eC3 (29 units), along with the Citroen C3 (322 units) and Renault Kwid (235 units), saw substantial declines.

DriveSpark Thinks

While August 2025 wasn't favorable for hatchback sales overall, growing demand for premium and electric models, combined with upcoming tax reforms under GST 2.0, could help revive this segment ahead of the festive season.
