HARMAN Launches Open-Source Connected Services Platform To Enhance Software-Defined Vehicle Development
HARMAN, a subsidiary of Samsung Electronics, has taken a significant step in the automotive sector by open-sourcing a comprehensive connected services platform. This initiative is part of the Eclipse Connected Services Platform (ECSP) project and aims to enhance collaboration and modular development in software-defined vehicles (SDVs). The platform is now accessible to automakers and developers, marking a crucial advancement for scalable, cloud-native innovations.
The ECSP supports large-scale connected car deployments, accommodating up to 100,000 vehicles. It facilitates essential functions such as secure vehicle-to-cloud connectivity, high-volume data management, user identity management, and vehicle telemetry. This development represents a major milestone for the Eclipse SDV Working Group, which focuses on creating open-source software for in-vehicle systems.
Heiko Huettel, VP of Software Products at HARMAN, emphasised the importance of collaboration in advancing SDV solutions. "Successfully accelerating the transformation of the software-defined vehicles era requires a collaborative spirit that brings together leaders across automotive and software development," he stated. By sharing their platform openly, HARMAN aims to speed up development cycles and enhance interoperability within the industry.
Last year, HARMAN joined the Eclipse SDV Working Group as a strategic member. This group is dedicated to supporting open-source software development for comprehensive vehicle systems. Mike Milinkovich, Executive Director of the Eclipse Foundation, praised HARMAN's contribution: "HARMAN is demonstrating industry leadership in contributing the ECSP to the Eclipse SDV Working Group."
HARMAN's commitment to open-source communities is evident through its investment in existing assets and developers. The company encourages other industry players to participate in evolving the Eclipse CSP initiative further. This move aligns with HARMAN's philosophy of fostering an open ecosystem for developing scalable SDV solutions.
