Matt Hagan Reaches Semifinals At NHRA Sonoma Nationals; Tony Stewart Suffers First Round Loss

Matt Hagan, fresh off his NHRA Northwest Nationals win, aimed for another victory at the NHRA Sonoma Nationals. Despite a strong performance, he narrowly missed reaching the Funny Car final. Hagan, a four-time NHRA World Champion, secured the top qualifying spot with a 3.861 in his TSR Johnson's Horsepowered Garage Dodge//SRT Hellcat. He defeated Jeff Diehl and Bob Tasca before losing to Austin Prock in the semifinals.

Hagan's semifinal loss moved him to second place in the NHRA Mission Foods Funny Car points standings. The tour will continue at Brainerd, Minnesota, from August 15-17 for the 13th race of the 2025 season. "We had a great weekend overall," said Hagan. "We obviously would have liked to have been able to pull the Johnson’s Horsepowered Garage Dodge//SRT Hellcat Funny Car in the winner’s circle."

Tony Stewart, Hagan's teammate and NASCAR Hall of Famer, faced his first first-round defeat of 2025 at Sonoma. Stewart qualified fifth but lost traction early against Josh Hart. Despite this setback, Stewart remains second in NHRA Top Fuel points, trailing leader Shawn Langdon by 48 points after 12 races.

"We definitely didn’t want to lose first round," said Stewart. "But to go this far into the season and have a streak of first-round wins like we had is something to be proud of for our organization." Stewart praised his team and crew chiefs for their efforts throughout the season.

Ida Zetterström from Sweden continued her progress with solid qualifying runs in her JCM/Dodge//SRT dragster. She faced defending champion Antron Brown in the opening round but lost despite running a competitive time due to mechanical issues. "You saw a lot of teams struggling to get down in qualifying," said Zetterström.

Zetterström expressed optimism about her team's direction despite the loss. She noted that they managed two good runs during qualifying and felt they were moving forward positively. The team aims to address mechanical issues before upcoming races.
