Petrol Car Owners Beware: Government To Roll Out E30 Petrol, Expect Significant Mileage Drop & Repair Bills!
India has surpassed its original ethanol blending target in petrol by reaching a 20 percent blend five years ahead of the set deadline, prompting the government to aim for a 30 percent blend by 2030. The acceleration in the country's ethanol blending program is a significant milestone, originally set for completion by 2030 but achieved much earlier, by April 1, 2025, when all fuel stations across the nation are required to sell E20 petrol.
The Indian Sugar & Bio-energy Manufacturers Association's director general, Deepak Ballani, highlighted the progress, stating, "This year, we've already done around 19-20 percent. This is five years earlier than the target for 2030." This achievement underscores India's commitment to enhancing its ethanol blending in petrol, aligning with environmental sustainability goals and reducing dependence on crude oil imports.
To reach the new target of 30 percent ethanol blending, the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas is assessing strategies for rolling out E30 petrol. The government contemplates either a phased approach, introducing E30 fuel city by city, or a unified strategy, making it available across the country simultaneously. This decision is crucial for a smooth transition and widespread adoption of the higher ethanol blend.
The increase in ethanol blending presents a mixed bag for petrol car owners in India. While it promises lower tail-pipe emissions and a reduced need for crude oil imports, thereby supporting farmers, it poses challenges for vehicle performance. Current petrol cars in India are designed to run on E20 fuel. A jump in ethanol content, particularly beyond 25 percent, could affect engine efficiency and fuel economy. Moreover, older vehicles not designed for E20 may face greater risks due to ethanol's corrosive nature, potentially damaging fuel tanks, seals, gaskets, and fuel lines through moisture absorption.
This move towards higher ethanol blending aligns with India's broader environmental goals, including job creation in agriculture, and marks a significant step in the country's journey towards sustainable fuel usage. However, the compatibility of current and older petrol cars with E30 fuel remains a concern, highlighting the need for careful consideration in the government's rollout strategy.
