Government Initiatives Enhance Toll Collection Regulation & Expand Electric Vehicle Infrastructure In India
The Union Minister of Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari, announced that ₹12.55 lakh was refunded for incorrect toll collections on national highways in 2024. This refund is part of the government's strict measures to regulate toll collection errors. The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) has also refunded ₹410 crore from FASTag transactions, with only 0.03% of total transactions being incorrectly charged.
To ensure fairness in toll collection, the government imposes severe penalties on companies that overcharge users. These penalties can range from 30 to 50 times the amount of the overcharged toll. This approach is embedded in the contracts with toll collection companies, highlighting the government's commitment to punishing any wrongdoing in toll practices.

The government is exploring technological solutions to prevent incorrect charges at toll plazas. Surveillance cameras equipped with Artificial Intelligence (AI) are being installed at high-value toll plazas. These cameras aim to accurately count and classify vehicles, reducing errors in toll collection and reflecting the government's dedication to leveraging technology for efficient operations.
In addition to improving toll collection practices, the government is enhancing traffic management on national highways. An Advanced Traffic Management System (ATMS) has been implemented across 325 projects covering about 20,000 km. This system demonstrates the government's commitment to improving road safety and efficiency.
Alongside technological advancements, the development of Wayside Amenities (WSAs) is underway. Approximately 700 WSAs are planned at intervals of 40-60 km on national highways, with 393 already established. This initiative aims to enhance the highway travel experience for commuters.

The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has collected ₹6,661 crore in the 2024-25 financial year through the Toll, Operate, and Transfer (TOT) mode. This reflects the government's vigorous approach towards infrastructure funding and development. Additionally, bonds for TOT-15 (Land parcels) are being evaluated as part of efforts to expand the country's highway network.
Electric Vehicle Infrastructure Expansion
In a significant move towards sustainable transportation, Gadkari revealed that as of March 17, 2025, India has established 26,367 public electric vehicle (EV) charging stations. The installation of 10,019 stations in the financial year 2024-25 alone underscores the government's investment in EV infrastructure, promoting environmentally friendly transportation solutions.

The government has taken decisive action against companies involved in fraudulent toll collection practices. Following an investigation by the Uttar Pradesh Special Task Force (STF), 14 companies were removed from toll collection duties and issued 'show cause notices'. This move underscores ongoing efforts to ensure transparency and accountability in toll collection practices.
The steps taken by the government to address incorrect toll collection and upgrade highway infrastructure indicate a comprehensive strategy for road transport and highway sector improvements. By penalising companies that collect incorrect charges, incorporating advanced technological features, and promoting EV infrastructure development, a robust and sustainable road transportation system is being established in India.
