GM Defense And NP Aerospace Collaborate To Address Future UK And NATO Mobility Opportunities
GM Defense is collaborating with NP Aerospace to meet the UK Ministry of Defence's Light Mobility Vehicle (LMV) needs under the Land Mobility Programme (LMP). This partnership also aims to explore opportunities with NATO and allied nations. The LMV initiative seeks to replace outdated vehicles with a Common Based Platform, aligning with the British Army's broader goal of modernising its vehicle fleet.
GM Defense, a division of General Motors, utilises commercially proven platforms that benefit from cost efficiencies due to high-volume manufacturing. This approach ensures affordable and customisable solutions ready for immediate deployment. Their flagship Infantry Squad Vehicle (ISV) and its utility variant are based on the robust Chevrolet Colorado ZR2. These vehicles feature a high percentage of commercial-off-the-shelf parts, making them adaptable and already in service with U.S. Army infantry, Special Operations Forces, Canadian Armed Forces, and other forward-deployed forces across the U.S., Europe, and Canada.
The collaboration between GM Defense and NP Aerospace aims to deliver advanced mobility solutions for the UK by leveraging GM’s investments in mobility research, product development, and manufacturing. Steve duMont, President of GM Defense, stated, "Our objective is to deliver the next generation of mobility solutions for the UK with speed, efficiency, and enhanced capabilities by leveraging GM’s extensive investments in mobility R&D, product development, and manufacturing. This is now coupled with NP Aerospace’s expertise in armor manufacturing, technology integration, vehicle maintenance and support."
NP Aerospace operates facilities in Coventry, UK and London, Ontario, Canada. They provide localised design and tailored content for global defence customers. Their expertise will support GM Defense in pursuing both the UK LMV Programme and Canadian Armed Forces’ Light Utility Vehicle programs.
James Kempston, CEO of NP Aerospace said: "With decades of experience maintaining and upgrading global vehicle fleets, we are pleased to expand our teaming agreement with GM Defense to introduce new capabilities and innovation to UK and NATO defence markets." The LMV Programme aims to modernise fleets while promoting economic growth as part of the Land Industrial Strategy.
Since 2023, GM Defense and NP Aerospace have collaborated on cooperative research and development projects. They focus on post-production support as well as global logistics for various initiatives. Both companies plan to showcase their advanced technologies at upcoming defense exhibitions later this year.
General Motors is committed to advancing transportation through technology that builds safer vehicles with lower emissions. Their brands like Buick, Cadillac, Chevrolet offer a wide range of innovative gasoline-powered vehicles alongside electric options as they transition towards an all-electric future.
