GM Appoints Sterling Anderson As Chief Product Officer To Enhance Vehicle Development
Sterling Anderson, co-founder and chief product officer of Aurora, has been appointed by General Motors as executive vice president, global product, and chief product officer. He will report to GM President Mark Reuss and manage the entire product lifecycle for both gas and electric vehicles. Anderson's responsibilities include overseeing hardware, software, services, and user experience. He will start his new role on June 2 at GM’s Mountain View Tech Center in California.
Anderson's extensive background includes leadership roles in automotive engineering and software innovation. Before founding Aurora in 2017, he worked at Tesla, where he led the Model X program and contributed to Tesla Autopilot development. His academic credentials include a master's and Ph.D. in robotics from MIT. At MIT, he developed the Intelligent Co-Pilot system, which advanced semi-autonomous vehicle safety.

Mark Reuss highlighted the evolving expectations of customers regarding vehicles. "Our customers are expecting more from our vehicles than ever before," Reuss stated. He emphasized the opportunity to enhance vehicle development with better integration of software and hardware, shorter development cycles, and a focus on seamless customer experiences.
Mary Barra, GM Chair and CEO, expressed confidence in Anderson's ability to drive progress within the company. "Sterling joins GM at a critical time as our industry continues to reinvent itself," she said. She noted his leadership in automotive engineering and tech start-ups as key assets that align with GM’s vision for innovative vehicle design.
Aurora recently achieved a significant milestone by launching America's first commercial driverless trucking service in Texas. This service operates regularly between Houston and Dallas. Anderson's experience with Aurora positions him well to contribute to GM’s goals of advancing technology-forward vehicles.
Anderson expressed enthusiasm about joining GM during this transformative period in the automotive industry. "GM has a deep heritage, bold vision, and the technical foundation to create products that millions of people love," he said. He looks forward to collaborating with GM’s team to continue building on their transformation efforts.
The appointment of Sterling Anderson marks an important step for General Motors as it seeks to lead in both traditional and electric vehicle markets through innovation and enhanced customer experiences.
