Global Youth Survey Shows Strong Preference For Electric Vehicles Among Young Urban Residents
Interest in electric vehicles (EVs) is set to rise significantly over the next decade, with more than one-third of survey participants anticipating owning an EV. This increase is driven by young urban residents who are keen on adopting new electrification technologies. Approximately half of these individuals believe such innovations will influence their mobility decisions, reflecting a growing trend towards sustainable transportation solutions.
Nissan commissioned a survey through Economist Impact to explore future mobility preferences among young city dwellers. The study involved 3,750 respondents from 15 cities worldwide. It highlighted a strong inclination towards EVs among younger generations, aligning with Nissan's focus on electrification and sustainability to address changing demands.

The survey revealed that 57% of young urban residents are open to altering their travel habits to lower their carbon footprint. In emerging cities, environmental concerns are particularly pressing, influencing mobility choices. Currently, EV ownership stands at 23%, but it is expected to exceed 35% within ten years. Enthusiasm for EVs is notably higher in emerging cities compared to developed ones.
Emerging cities like Shanghai, Sao Paulo, and Mexico City show heightened interest in EVs due to pollution and congestion issues. In these areas, 44% of respondents foresee driving EVs within five years, compared to 31% in developed cities. Factors affecting EV adoption include battery performance, charging infrastructure, and costs.
Younger urbanites express significant interest in technologies like energy storage and vehicle-to-everything (V-to-X). Over 40% of respondents acknowledge that these advancements will impact their mobility decisions. Many are aware that EVs can power external devices and store excess renewable energy, transforming them into tools for energy management beyond mere transportation.
In emerging cities, there is greater enthusiasm for using EVs beyond mobility purposes, such as sharing electricity during emergencies. This aligns with Nissan's vision of promoting cleaner and more inclusive mobility solutions globally.
Nissan's Commitment to Sustainable Mobility
Nissan continues to advance its electrification strategy by making EVs more accessible and cost-competitive. The company focuses on improving charging infrastructure and enhancing battery technology while developing cost-effective solutions. By integrating smart charging solutions and vehicle-to-everything (V2X) innovations, Nissan aims to create a comprehensive and efficient EV energy ecosystem.
Lavanya Wadgaonkar from Nissan emphasised the importance of making electrification seamless and practical for long-term success. "This survey reaffirms the growing demand for electrification," said Wadgaonkar. "At Nissan, we leverage data-driven research and innovation to bridge gaps."
The survey findings underscore the need for flexible multimodal solutions that integrate public transit, shared mobility, and active transport into a connected network. Ritu Bhandari from Economist Impact noted the importance of balancing environmental goals with commuter priorities like affordability and convenience.
Nissan remains committed to providing practical solutions for global transport needs while investing in future-ready technologies for a sustainable transportation future.
